The phone call came in the middle of the night, waking me from my slumber. My dog was already up, barking at the door to go out, but I didn't want to get out of bed. I'd had a long day at work and just wanted to sleep.

I checked my phone. It was three in the morning. I groaned and rubbed my eyes as I answered it. "Hello?"

"Mr. Anderson?" a man asked on the other end of the line.

"Yeah, this is him. Who is this?"

"This is Professor Radcliffe with the European Space Agency," he replied. "I'm sorry to bother you so late, but it's quite urgent."

"What are you calling about this time?" I grumbled, sitting up in bed. "You guys are on your own for now until we can figure out who's funding you next month."

"This isn't about funding or anything like that, Mr. Anderson," he said anxiously. "I'm calling about your trip to Mars."

"Oh," I replied, suddenly wide awake. "You got my letter?"

"Yes, I did get your letter," he continued, speaking more quickly now that he knew I was listening seriously. "You remember how we were unable to make contact with our satellite on Mars last year? We want you back at ESA headquarters tomorrow morning for a new expedition through our multiverse machine."

My eyes widened at his statement, and my eyebrows shot up into my hairline. "Are you serious? You've found a way to talk to that satellite?"

"We have indeed," he confirmed excitedly. "We're all very excited about it here."

My dog was still barking outside my bedroom door, and a clock from downstairs chimed four times in quick succession as I sat there quiet for several seconds before responding again. "Okay... let me ask you something then... why me?"

On the other end of the line, there was silence for a moment before Prof. Radcliffe said in an almost conspiratorial tone, "Let's just say we weren't expecting someone quite like you to take us up on our offer..."
