Published 6/8/2023When French King announces a cooking competition, ambitious Chef Yves must demonstrate not only his extraordinary culinary skill, but also his courage and wit, in order to beat his rivals, surprise the jury, and prove his true French pride.
The kitchen was a disaster area. Panicked servants were rushing back and forth as they tried to clean up the mess, but it was a fruitless effort. The King would be here any minute.
In the middle of all this chaos stood Yves, a smile plastered on his face. He looked around at the work being done by his peers, and couldn't help but chuckle to himself. This wasn't so bad - he knew that his culinary skills would shine through even in such conditions.
A messenger from the court ran up to him. When he saw that Yves was the one standing there, he began to bow profusely. "Monsieur Yves! It's an honor to see you here!"
Yves chuckled again, more out of nervousness than amusement this time. "I'm sorry for the condition of my kitchen! And please, get up! You're making me feel like I'm royalty." He returned the messenger's bow with one of his own before turning around to face his kitchen once more.
The messenger followed suit, and began to gesture wildly with both his hands as he excitedly told Yves the news: The King will be here soon! He wanted to personally congratulate Monsieur Yves for winning this year's competition! Everyone else had already left!
Yves smiled again, trying hard not to let his anxiety show on his face. But he couldn't keep it up for long, and eventually broke into laughter once more. Who could blame him? How ridiculous it all was! The idea that anyone could have thought he would have lost today... Still laughing, he turned back towards the kitchen and shrugged off the messenger's hand from his shoulder. "It's all right," he said between guffaws, "I'll be ready for him when he gets here."
The messenger gave him an odd look, but bowed again and withdrew from the kitchen. Yves watched him go outside through a small window in one of the walls surrounding him; looking back at the mess around him, he muttered under his breath: "I certainly hope so..."
