Blooming Sands

It was a hot day, and I was tired. My mom had dragged me around the city all day looking for some furniture, and now we were finally home. The house was a bit old and small, with one bedroom and a kitchen for us to live in. There was no living room or bathroom; it seemed like our house was taken right out of the 70s. It had a garden that no one had taken care of in years. I walked outside to the garden to get a better look at the place while my mom went inside to get some water.

I looked around at all the plants that had gone wild; I didn't recognize most of them because they were local species. I reached out to touch one of the leaves of a plant near me and suddenly heard a loud "moo". Right in front of me stood a cow! It had wandered into our garden from across the road.

"Hey! Who let this cow into our garden?" I shouted, "Mom!"

I started jogging towards the door when I heard a woman's voice from behind me say, "That's not your cow."

I turned around and saw an older woman with grey hair standing there with a smirk on her face. She was carrying something in her arms, which she then put down onto the ground next to her. Mom walked over to us when she heard my call for help.

"We're just visiting," she said before introducing herself as Mrs Zhang, our new neighbor. Her son is Jack, who would be attending my school starting tomorrow... apparently he's quite smart, though his mom didn't seem very proud of him. Anyhow, she asked if we knew how to take care of cows back home (She meant America) which was when I realized that this cow must belong to her son. I told her that we had cows at home but we don't have any in our backyard so we had no idea how they got here... Then she followed up by telling me how her Jack found it injured near their house yesterday and brought it here because he couldn't bear seeing it in pain. Apparently he likes animals more than humans (Thinking about it now, that makes sense). Anyhow, she asked if we could take care of it until her son came back from school tonight and then took off with that dirty smirk still plastered on her face.

That night was like any other night; Mom cooked dinner while I did my homework and then we went to bed early before school starts tomorrow... Except everything changed when I woke up the next morning (And this part isn't really something you expect every day). Outside my room stood Mrs Zhang who'd somehow made it past both my mom and me without us noticing... How does she do that? Anyhow, she was holding two bowls of breakfast food which she gave me along with an umbrella saying that Jack wanted me to eat this before school started so I wouldn't be late... If only she knew how hungry I was. So yeah there I am eating breakfast accompanied by an old lady while my mom is taking forever getting ready for work (and where exactly did she get those clothes?).

So anyways, school started today! Pretty normal first day... except things got weird after lunch break when everyone rushed out of class because Ms Li announced that there would be free ice cream given away by some student council candidates... Turns out there were two candidates running (why were there even two? We're only in grade 6) and one candidate had decided to give away free ice cream to promote herself as a responsible leader willing to help those in need! The other candidate? None other than Jack Zhang himself who decided he wanted to give away free ice cream because he felt bad for the cow suffering at home without its owner around! After Ms Li wrote both candidates' names on the board for us to vote for later today during recess, everyone ran outside excitedly expecting some free ice cream despite knowing whoever wins will probably start charging money once she gets elected... But alas Jack won by 5 votes thanks to his popularity as well as his loveable personality! He'll probably start charging money soon anyways but hey at least he's fun while he lasts. Also since his mom is here too maybe they can become friends or something cause last time I checked Mrs Zhang wasn't much of a people person... Anyhow enjoyed my first day at school but things are about to get interesting tomorrow because apparently Jack will be joining us for gym class... Can't wait!

When I arrived at school the next day, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. Jack Zhang, the boy who had brought a cow into our garden, was going to join us for gym class. The whole school was buzzing with excitement, and even the teachers seemed intrigued by the prospect of having a cow-loving classmate. As we gathered on the field, I spotted Jack standing at the back, looking slightly nervous.

"Hey, Jack!" I called out, waving my hand to get his attention. He looked up and smiled, relief washing over his face.

"Hey, it's you!" he exclaimed, making his way towards me. "I was hoping I'd see a familiar face here."

I chuckled and introduced myself properly. We chatted animatedly as we waited for the teacher to organize the class. Jack shared stories about his adventures rescuing animals and his dream of becoming a veterinarian.

"I just can't stand seeing animals suffer," he said earnestly, his eyes lighting up. "I want to save as many as I can."

I was genuinely impressed by his passion and empathy. Here was someone who cared deeply about the world around him, even at such a young age. It was refreshing to meet a person so dedicated to making a difference.

As the gym class began, Jack's enthusiasm seemed to infect everyone around him. He suggested games that involved teamwork and encouraged us to cheer for one another. It was the most enjoyable gym class I had ever experienced, and I noticed that even the normally disinterested students were having a great time.

After class, as we walked towards the school building, Jack turned to me with a mischievous grin.

"Hey, do you want to see something cool?" he asked.

Intrigued, I nodded eagerly, wondering what Jack had up his sleeve. He led me to a secluded corner of the schoolyard, where a group of flower pots caught my eye. To my surprise, the pots were overflowing with vibrant, blooming flowers.

"Wow, these are amazing!" I exclaimed, marveling at the beauty before me.

Jack beamed with pride. "I planted these flowers here a few months ago. I guess they just decided to bloom today!"

I looked at him in awe. Not only was he kind to animals, but he also had a talent for nurturing plants. Jack was quickly becoming a person I admired and valued as a friend.

As the weeks went by, Jack and I became inseparable. We spent time together both at school and at his house, where I helped take care of the cow, Daisy. Jack had nursed her back to health, and she had become a beloved member of our little community. Mrs. Zhang, too, seemed to soften under the influence of her son's newfound friendships.

One day, as we sat in Jack's garden, enjoying a peaceful afternoon, Mrs. Zhang approached us with a thoughtful expression on her face.

"You two have brought so much joy into our lives," she said, her voice soft. "I want to thank you for taking care of Daisy and for helping Jack come out of his shell. He's finally found friends who appreciate him for who he is."

Touched by her words, I smiled gratefully. "It's been a pleasure getting to know both of you. Jack has changed our school for the better."

Mrs. Zhang nodded, her eyes glistening with tears. "You know, it's funny how a stray cow could bring us all together. Sometimes, life has a way of surprising us."

As we sat there, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of newfound friendship, I couldn't help but think how fortunate I was to have stumbled upon this extraordinary adventure. Little did I know that our lives were about to take an even more unexpected turn, as the secrets hidden within our sleepy town began to unravel.
