Complicity in the War of Races
·
Published 6/9/2023In a rural town dating back to the 1st century BCE, a human, vampire, angel, and demon form an unlikely partnership as they struggle to uncover a sinister conspiracy before a devastating war between the races breaks out - but will treason from within foil their efforts?

The assassin walked through the fog, his long black cloak flowing behind him. A hood covered his face, hiding his features from view. He could feel his eyes stare at the back of a man's neck. The man was walking down an alley on his way home from work.
The man turned the corner, and in one fluid movement, the assassin produced a knife and pierced it into the back of the man's neck. He crumpled to the ground, dead before he hit the pavement. The assassin wiped the blood off his knife and made his way down another street.
A woman screamed as she fumbled with her keys to her door. The door opened and she ran inside, slamming it shut behind her. The assassin proceeded to slide a small pin into the lock, picking it open with ease. He entered through the door and closed it behind him.
He took out a knife and inched toward where he heard her footsteps echoing off of what sounded like a kitchen wall. She screamed again as he jumped her from behind, covering her mouth with one hand while holding a knife to her throat with the other. With just enough pressure to slice open her skin, he held firm until she stopped struggling under him. He dragged her body out of the apartment by her hair and left, closing the door behind him again.
He made his way down another street until suddenly an arrow lodged itself into one of his shoulders. The assassin rolled out of its way before it could hit his head and retrieved it from where it landed on the ground in front of him. He looked up to see if anyone was nearby who may have seen him shot by mistake, but all he saw was a group of trees bordering a garden at the edge of town where someone had shot him from behind cover.
He pulled another arrow from his quiver and fired it at where he thought they were located in between two trees. No one was there anymore, but he saw something that caught his eye; a light blue feather sticking out from one of them where he thought someone must have been standing earlier.
He walked over to examine it more closely when suddenly someone jumped on top of him from above, knocking him down onto the ground in front of what looked like a shed behind one of the trees in question. It was dark outside now; so dark that he couldn't even see what was attacking him in this darkness except for some sort of silhouette high above him surrounded by a blue aura.
He tried stabbing his knife up at whatever was attacking him, but nothing happened; no matter how hard or fast he stabbed, nothing would penetrate its body as he could feel its weight on top of him getting heavier by the second. Suddenly something stabbed itself into his shoulder along with another pain across his stomach and chest as well followed by something sharp jabbing into each end of his spine and exiting out through holes in both sides of his back leaving cuts there as well that started bleeding hard enough for blood to leak out all over everything around them on where they were fighting each other near their feet on that garden's soil that had gotten wet from all their rolling onto it after their struggle had moved them about 10 yards away from where they started fighting to get closer to that shed in hopes that whoever this thing was would have gone inside to hide inside it rather than fight outside in plain sight for anyone who could see them here like this under these dark conditions like this... which hadn't included any other people so far tonight except for those people who had been killed earlier tonight -- including those women murdered at their homes alone -- making sure they never knew who'd killed them or why someone had wanted them dead...
