A wise old owl perched atop a large stone, calling to his grandchildren who flew above him in the night sky. They were the only ones he could listen to because they were the only ones who would listen to him.

“Paolo!” He called out “Are you listening? It is not safe out there for you! You must find a better place to live!”

The young owl tilted his head and cocked an eye at his grandfather; he had heard this speech a hundred times before. And he had ignored it as many times.

“Grandfather, I don't even know why you keep saying that. I'm safe here, no one can hurt me here.” He replied with a smug grin.

His grandfather swooped down from the rock and landed on Paolo's shoulder “I am not worried about your safety son, I am worried for your wisdom! You are an intelligent bird, but if you stay here you will never learn anything of value!” He said gravely “You must grow up and see the world my son! You must seek out knowledge and return with that knowledge! Only then can you be wise enough to protect yourself in this world.” He said as he flapped his wings and took flight over the woods again, disappearing into the dark skies above them.

Paolo peered around himself slowly, at the trees and bushes surrounding him. This was his home and this was where he felt safe, so why did his grandfather insist on trying to get him to leave? The birds of this forest lived their lives in peace and harmony with nature, they needed no more wisdom than that. The sage owl may have been old and wise but he didn't understand that.

He settled back down on the log and closed his eyes, prepared to sleep for another few hours until dawn came and he could enjoy the sunshine once more. But as he drifted off into slumber a strange noise drifted through the wind to him. A sound unlike anything else he had ever heard before.

It was a scream, followed by a crashing noise that shook him from his dreams instantly. As soon as he opened his eyes he looked around wildly but could see nothing out of place in the early morning hour, but then another scream sounded nearby him and Paolo could hear thrashing in the bushes just beyond where he sat.
