Artistic Rebellion
·
Published 12/4/2023I stand on the rooftop, spray can in hand, staring at the blank brick wall in front of me. It’s a canvas just waiting to be painted. I take a deep breath and let my mind go blank, allowing the art to come to me.
A few quick shakes and then I’m ready. I press down on the nozzle and watch as vibrant colors shoot out onto the wall. My hand moves quickly, creating lines and shapes that blend together seamlessly.
As I work, my mind begins to wander. I think about all the things that are wrong with this world – the poverty, the inequality, the corruption. It feels overwhelming at times, like there’s nothing I can do to make a difference.
But then I remember why I started doing this in the first place. Art is my voice. It’s how I express myself when words aren’t enough. And maybe, just maybe, it can be more than that.
I step back and admire my work. The wall is covered in a mural of people from all walks of life – young and old, rich and poor, black and white. They’re all reaching out towards something just beyond their grasp.
It’s a reminder that we’re all in this together, no matter who we are or where we come from. And if we want things to change, we have to fight for it.
I snap a picture of my work and upload it to my blog with the caption: “Art is Resistance.”

The streets are quiet as I make my way home. Most people are too afraid to be out after dark these days – afraid of what might happen if they cross paths with one of the regime’s enforcers.
I keep my head down as I walk, trying not to draw attention to myself. But it’s hard not to notice all the empty storefronts and boarded-up buildings.
This used to be a thriving city – full of life and energy. But now it’s just a shell of what it once was.
I turn onto my street and stop dead in my tracks. There, on the wall of my apartment building, is another mural. It’s a giant eye – bloodshot and angry.
I recognize the artist immediately. It’s the work of Phantom – one of the most notorious graffiti artists in the city.
Phantom has been making a name for himself lately by targeting the regime directly. His work is bold and daring – calling out their corruption and oppression for all to see.
But he’s also dangerous. The enforcers are desperate to catch him and make an example out of him.
I quickly snap a picture of his latest piece and upload it to my blog with the caption: “The Eye Sees All.”

The next day at school, I can’t focus on anything. All I can think about is Phantom and what he’s trying to say with his art.
Is he trying to start a revolution? Or is he just looking for attention?
As soon as the final bell rings, I grab my backpack and head straight for home. I need to find out more about this guy.
I spend hours scouring the internet, searching for any information I can find on Phantom. But there’s nothing – no pictures, no articles, nothing.
It’s like he doesn’t even exist.
Frustrated, I slam my laptop shut and head over to my art supplies. Maybe some painting will help clear my mind.
Just as I’m about to start, I hear a knock at my door. My heart skips a beat as I rush over to answer it.
On the other side stands a tall figure wearing a black hoodie and sunglasses – Phantom himself.
My jaw drops as he pushes past me into the apartment.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing?” I shout after him.
He ignores me and heads straight for the rooftop.
I follow close behind, not sure what to expect.
Phantom stands in front of my latest mural and studies it for a moment. Then he turns to me and removes his sunglasses, revealing a pair of piercing blue eyes.
“You’ve got talent,” he says, nodding approvingly. “But you need to be careful. The enforcers are watching.”
I swallow hard, suddenly aware of just how dangerous this guy is.
“Why are you here?” I ask, trying to sound brave.
He looks at me and smiles. “I need your help.”
