I hate flying. I get claustrophobic in the pocket sized space of an economy class seat. The stale air, the crying babies and the incessant chatter of the flight attendants.
But I don’t have a choice. This is my job, and despite hating it, I am good at it.
I arrived in Auckland after an overnight flight from San Francisco. It was a short layover before jumping on another plane to Wellington. While wandering through the airport I bumped into a woman with a baby, who spilled coffee all over me. She immediately apologized and handed me some napkins to clean off my shirt.
“It’s ok. No big deal” I said, wiping off the mess from my pants, “By the way, you have a really cute baby there!”
The woman smiled “Thanks! I know she looks much younger than her age but she is actually 4 months old!”
I looked back at the baby girl and noticed that in addition to being really cute, she also looked very familiar. I asked if I could hold her for a second and took her from the woman’s arms. Suddenly it hit me... this was Bill Gateson’s daughter! The poor guy had never even gotten married before his wife died during childbirth! They must have named this little angel after his mom - Melinda Gateson! The coincidence was amazing!
I handed the baby back to its mother and shook hands with both of them before walking away saying goodbye. It made me feel good that someone so important like Bill Gateson would carry on his family name by having such a beautiful daughter... God Bless America!
