"YOU'RE WHAT?"

Alice paced back and forth in front of my desk, the heels of her boots clicking on the concrete floor. Her tail flicked with agitation, though I had no idea why. This was supposed to be a simple job.

"I just told you, I'm pregnant."

I rubbed my face. "You can't be pregnant. You're not human."

She stopped her pacing and crossed her arms. "I know that!" she said, exasperated. "But I am now." She gestured at her midsection, where a slight bulge could be seen through the fabric of her white dress shirt. The buttons were straining under the pressure.

"How?" I asked.

She sighed and sat in one of the chairs in front of my desk. "It's a long story," she said, pulling a tissue from her pocket and wiping at her eyes with it. "Do you mind if we start at the beginning? Because every time I go back there, I cry."

I nodded and leaned back in my chair as she took another deep breath and started to talk.
