The wind howled through the trees and the leaves rustled in an eerie way. This was my third time visiting this house, and the first two times I’d felt nothing but unease.

This place gave me the creeps. The atmosphere was just… wrong.

I pulled up to the porch and let my hand fall on the door knocker.

It made a soft clanging noise as it hit the wood of the door. The sound echoed through the house, and all was silent again. The wind had died down, leaving only an eerie stillness behind.

The door creaked open and my heart raced in my chest. My eyes flickered back and forth in their sockets as adrenaline pumped through my body.

A woman stood before me, wearing a light blue dress that swirled around her ankles as if caught by some invisible wind. Her eyes were black, without a speck of white in them, and her face was gaunt and pale with sharp cheek bones. She beckoned for me to enter, with a gesture that seemed too delicate to be human.

I swallowed hard and stepped inside, then shut the door behind me. The room was dark, so I couldn't see much, save for a fireplace crackling in one corner of the room. But something about this woman unnerved me, so I took small steps towards the fire where I could at least see somewhat better; where I wouldn't have to look at her creepy face trying to peer into mine for clues about what she was thinking about me or waiting for me to do next.

"You're here for Bella?" I asked her, when she didn't say anything after several moments of silence had passed between us. I didn't feel comfortable not talking to her -- it was like if we were both quiet long enough we would hear each other's heartbeat and know that we were both humans in this eerie building with no other people around -- so I decided to keep myself distracted by talking. But she stayed silent and motionless before me in her blue dress as if waiting for something else from me instead of replying to what I'd said already. "I've already paid you." I added quickly, pulling out my wallet from my pocket and opening it so she could see what money was left inside it before I ran out entirely; because even though it looked like there should be plenty left over after buying all those toys for Bella, somehow there never seemed to be enough money when it came time to buy food for myself or pay rent on time instead of being late with it on purpose so I'd get evicted again and be forced to move into a new place across town where no one knew who I was or that I used to work at a bookstore until 5 months ago instead of being unemployed now these days except during Christmas when we got really busy and needed extra help but none of us ever got hired on permanently because we were too expensive since we all had full-time jobs somewhere else; but maybe she would tell me that even though she wasn't saying anything right now so maybe she couldn't speak English? Or maybe she just didn't want to talk right now? Maybe she wanted me to keep talking instead? Maybe it's rude not to talk back when someone is already conversing with you? Maybe only Americans are rude like that? Maybe they don't know how civilized Europeans are? Or maybe they think Americans are too polite because they say 'Yes ma'am' or 'Yes sir' when they answer questions instead of just giving short answers? Oh God this is confusing! What am *I* supposed to do?!
