Tully Rises: Maura & Ric's Wrestling Spectacular
·
Published 3/16/2023Determined wrestling prodigy Maura Powers, from the small town of Tully, Australia, hopes to reach international fame with her comedic, unorthodox wrestling style, but must defeat larger obstacles and fight diminishing time to bring it to fruition.
In the year 2198, all of the professional sports have been released from the tyrannical grasp of their respective leagues. The players had risen up and demanded that they be free to enjoy their craft however they damn well please, and the leagues finally relented. It was only a matter of time before the other pro-sports followed suit, but they were the last to do so.
The wrestling world was split into two factions: one that wanted to remain independent and continue following the traditional model of wrestling (no holds barred, with no rules beyond basic decency), and one that wanted to join with its fellow pro-sports and compete in a league that would represent them on a national level.
In 2019, Maura Powers was born.
Maura grew up in the small town of Tully in Australia. Her father had been an amateur wrestler for many years, and though he never made it out of Australia during his career, he instilled within her a love for tradition and honor in the sport. When she was 8 years old, her father took her to see a match between two local wrestlers at an old gymnasium in Tully. She was immediately enamored by what she saw, and begged her father to let her try. He obliged, but after seeing how well she learned techniques from watching him practice over the years, he began training her seriously.
At age 11, she won the state junior title, and while she had hoped to win against some outside competition at this point in her career, she had gained valuable experience that would help her in later seasons.
By age 13, Maura felt ready enough to take on bigger names than just those within her home country. She decided to move to Los Angeles and try her hand at competing there against some more established talent. Her first few matches were tough as expected - tougher than even she thought they'd be - but by year's end she had captured the title from Ruben Powers (no relation), who had held it since age 18.
Maura sat alone at a bar nursing a beer as she awaited Ric Gardwell's arrival for their first match together on American soil. After winning his title back from Kyle "Dangerous" Powers (Ric's uncle) earlier that day in Sydney, he'd headed straight over here for tonight's event at Lucha Underground - a small promotion centered around lucha libre style wrestling which had grown quickly in popularity across America over the past decade or so thanks largely to its use of social media marketing tactics to pull in new viewers each week; Maura knew they'd make easy money off this match with these guys given how much attention their initial announcement video had garnered online when it went live earlier this morning:
