The road was long and dark. Two lanes of asphalt, one yellow line down the middle, a white line on each side. The headlights of the cars would cut through the darkness every few seconds. Sometimes they’d be shining on an old wooden fence, other times on a tree with no leaves on it. But that was all there was to see.

The two aliens trotted along the road in their bright white robes. Peter wore his pulled over his head like a hood, hiding his face from view, while Liam’s hood was held out at an angle so he could see where he was going better. He had a tall stature – even for an alien – and a blackish-green skin tone that made him blend in perfectly with the forest around them. Peter was shorter and had more of a grayish skin tone so he stuck out against the night sky and surrounding trees like a sore thumb.

“Where are you going?” said Peter. “We can’t see anything ahead of us! We’ll never make it through the woods in this darkness!”

Liam stopped running and looked around. Peter came to a halt behind him, then stepped forward and patted him on the shoulder, causing him to look up and face him. “Are you ready now? I don’t think we should go any further tonight anyways, we’re already pretty far away from home.”

Peter sighed before nodding reluctantly. “I suppose… yes, I guess we should stop here for the night then…” He moved back as Liam began looking around them for somewhere to rest for the night.

A few minutes later they had found a suitable spot under an old oak tree with low hanging branches that would keep them hidden from passersby during the night if need be. They had set up camp between two thick roots that were lying in front of them so it blocked their view of the highway but also gave them some shelter from rain or anything else falling from above it seemed.

Peter sat down against a root and removed his hood from his head, revealing his long spiky black hair which fell down over his shoulders while he ran his hand through it to get rid of some of the sweat that he felt forming on it. His eyes were closed when suddenly something hit him in the forehead so hard he nearly fell backwards onto his rear end as he opened his eyes again and saw Liam standing right in front of him with a serious expression on his face holding something small and round in his hand that had fallen right in front of Peter earlier when they were walking down the road together but neither had noticed until now when they both looked at each other at almost the same time after hearing what sounded like a loud slap echo through the silence of their surroundings followed by several more that seemed to follow suit after only moments later when they had just started registering what exactly made those noises just seconds ago.

He picked up one of those objects that were littering their feet as well as some others scattered about in front of them again as well as some new ones that seemed to continue hitting them whenever Liam threw one into the air again with renewed enthusiasm after seeing how many different types there actually were: metal balls with grooves carved into them across their surface, metal balls without grooves but with round holes punched into their center at various places along their perimeter, metal balls without any holes but with lines etched into their surface seemingly randomly, metal balls without holes or grooves but with actual letters engraved into them instead…
