"I don't think we should be here, Mother. Look at all the strange things in this city."

"Aziza's father is a magistrate, so she should be able to handle whatever surprises she finds on this trip," said her mother. "Besides, I was young once too. You will find Elden Ring very different from home but it is not that unusual, and you are quite perceptive. You will have an excellent time."

"Mother, I still don't understand why I can't go with you to Tyrnaus," Aziza complained. "I could help you with your research while Father is busy."

"You know there is no time to spare if we are to get back before the festival of Adonis," said her mother. "Father will have to go by himself. I am sure he will find his way around well enough. Besides, you will have plenty of time to enjoy yourself in Elden Ring. Your father has sent word ahead and friends are looking forward to your visit."

Aziza sighed as she gazed out the window of the carriage on the last leg of their journey from the port city of Tyrnaus along the Imperial Way toward the capital. The road was hard-packed dirt and dust billowed up behind them as they rattled over occasional bumps in the surface. The carriage made its way through narrow stone arches that supported the ceiling of a covered passageway that ran alongside a marshy lake. Huge birds with long necks and snakelike heads hung motionless in the air above and occasionally dipped into the water for fish or frogs or something else Aziza didn't want to think about. The whole scene was mysterious and more than a little frightening but Mother insisted they travel this way instead of taking a ship across the channel that separated Tyrnaus from Elden Ring because Father had asked them to avoid being seen by people who might recognize him in public places. That meant traveling through private channels and avoiding roads called "Imperial Way." Although Aziza did not remember ever having been here before, it seemed familiar somehow and she felt distantly drawn toward something hidden just beyond her reach. She glanced over at her mother and saw that hers was a face full of worry even though her eyes were fixed on something outside Aziza's view beyond her own window.

"Mother, what is wrong?" she asked softly so as not to draw attention from any other travelers who might be nearby in case her mother wanted to keep it secret.

Her mother let out a weary sigh, her gaze lingering outside the window. "Aziza," she said, her voice tinged with a mix of concern and caution, "there are forces at play in Elden Ring that we must be wary of. It is not a city of mere wonders and oddities. There are secrets here, hidden beneath its enchanting facade."

Aziza's eyes widened with curiosity and a touch of fear. "What kind of secrets, Mother?"

Her mother turned to her, her eyes filled with both love and trepidation. "Secrets that could bring great danger upon us if we're not careful. Elden Ring may seem like a magical place, but there are those who would do anything to keep their true intentions hidden."

Aziza's heart raced, her mind flooded with questions. "Who are these people, Mother? And why would they want to harm us?"

"We can't be sure yet," her mother replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "But your father has been investigating something—a dangerous artifact that could upset the fragile balance of power in Elden Ring. We've learned that there are those who seek to possess it, and they would stop at nothing to ensure its secrets remain concealed."

Understanding the gravity of the situation, Aziza clutched her mother's hand. "Why did Father send us here then? Why did he put us in this peril?"

Her mother's lips tightened into a thin line. "He had no choice, Aziza. It was the only way to keep you safe. To send you away while he confronts the darkness that looms in Elden Ring. We must trust that he knows what he's doing."

The carriage rattled on, the sound of their horse's hooves creating a steady rhythm on the worn road. Aziza felt a mixture of apprehension and an unyielding determination. No matter the cost, she couldn't just sit idly by while her father fought his battles alone.

"Mother," she said, her voice resolute, "I don't want to be kept in the dark anymore. I want to help Father, protect him."

Her mother's grip on her hand tightened. She hesitated for a moment before giving a small nod. "Very well, my dear. If you're to be part of this journey, there are things I must tell you. But promise me this, promise me you'll be cautious and think before you act. The dangers we face are unlike anything we've encountered before."

Aziza nodded, her determination unwavering. "I promise, Mother. I won't let you or Father down."

As the carriage continued its journey toward the heart of Elden Ring, Aziza's mind buzzed with newfound knowledge, her sense of adventure melding with a growing anticipation. The city ahead, with its strange allure and hidden threats, became a puzzle she was determined to solve. She would uncover the truth behind her father's quest, and in doing so, she would bring them all back to safety.

Little did she know, beyond the walls of Elden Ring, a darkness loomed, a darkness that hungered for the secrets she sought, a darkness that only grew stronger with every step they took toward their uncertain fate.
