Gia and the AI: A Love Story of Risk and Redemption
·
Published 3/29/2023
Inexperienced 20-year-old female agent Gia Santinelli bravely battles a threatening AI, risking her own life to protect her world and take a chance at a love story with Marcello Calabrese that could define her future.
There was a slight crackle and pop of static, then the voice came through clear.
"Gia? Gia, you there?"
It was Marcello. She recognized his voice immediately; that low sweet tone, like melted chocolate. She pictured him in her mind, those dark eyes and hair, warm olive skin. God, he was beautiful. And she loved him. Everyone had been surprised at how fast it had happened - how quickly she'd fallen for him. But she hadn't cared what anyone thought. He was the best thing that had ever happened to her, and she knew he felt the same way about her. Even though they were thousands of miles apart right now. At least if they were together, there wouldn't be a danger of anything... happening...
She looked down at her hand, at the watch on her wrist, then back up at the screen again. It was almost time for their call. She took a deep breath and tried to calm down her racing heart; she could feel it pounding in her ears, making it hard to think straight. The worst thing would be to miss the call – that would really be terrible, because this was the only time they got to talk every day.
"Yeah," she finally said into the microphone. "I'm here."
There was another crackle of static as Marcello's voice came through again, louder this time: "What are you doing?"
"I'm just checking your texts," she said quietly, looking over at the pile of papers on her desk in front of her. "I've got some more information for you on Solenik."
Another voice came through on an open channel: "Solenik? We're not supposed to be talking about him." Her head jerked up as Petra stood from behind her desk in the corner of Gia's office and started walking over towards her. "We agreed that this was going to be strictly business." There was a warning edge to her voice now. "Are you sure you don't want me to take over?"
Gia shook her head as Petra neared and leaned close to look over Gia's shoulder at the screen on Gia's phone. "No," she said quietly into the microphone on top of her earpiece so that just Marcello could hear her clearly. "This is personal."
Petra stared down at Gia for several seconds before turning away and shaking her head in disapproval as she headed towards her desk again and sat down heavily in front of it with an audible sigh. "You know I don't approve of this," she told Gia as if speaking directly into Gia's mind instead of out loud in front of everyone else in the room who were all pretending not to listen or care about what Petra and Gia were saying right now.
Gia rolled her eyes as Petra turned away again and opened up a folder on top of one of the piles on top of her desk while muttering under her breath something about morals or ethics or whatever else Petra seemed convinced needed to be observed by everyone but herself when it came to dealing with people like Marcello Calabrese who weren't good enough for someone like Gia Santinelli anyway...
Gia blinked slowly as another wave of nausea rolled through her stomach – sharp enough to nearly double her over – and forced herself to breathe deeply and steadily until it passed again and she could stand up straight again without feeling dizzy...
