I had been assigned to Los Angeles for a week when I met Cole. It was my first time in the city and I didn't really have any friends or family here, so I made sure to keep my head down. I just wanted to do my job, get paid, and go back home.

But it seems that wherever you go there are always people who want to screw you over.

I was on my way back to the hotel where I was staying when a voice called out from behind me, "Hey!"

I turned around, expecting to see some street punk trying to mug me, but no one was there. Had I imagined the voice?

"Up here," The voice said again and this time I looked up at the building across from me. On the roof, standing against the ledge with his hands in his pockets, was a man dressed all in black. There was something shiny on top of his head as he nodded towards me. He couldn't be more than 25 years old and he had short brown hair which he had slicked back on both sides of his head.

His eyes were sad and his face looked tired. He looked like someone who had seen too many shitty things in life and now didn't care what happened next. He stared at me for a moment before stepping back and jumping off the edge of the building right into thin air.

I froze in place as I watched him fall down towards the ground below. My heart pounded and my breath caught in my throat as images of 9/11 flashed through my mind's eye. But then something odd happened; instead of crashing down onto the pavement, he suddenly disappeared midair and reappeared about five feet away from where he had jumped from, perfectly unharmed. His clothes were perfectly clean and not a single strand of his hair or eyelash was out of place.

I looked up at him in awe and disbelief as he walked back towards me with a smile on his face. "You're new here aren't you?" He asked cheerfully as though nothing had happened a minute ago. "That's why you don't know about us."

"Us?" I repeated numbly as my brain struggled to process what I'd just seen. "There's an *us*?"

"Yes, a hidden world beneath the surface of this city," Cole replied, a tinge of excitement in his voice. "A world of secrets, mysteries, and abilities beyond what any ordinary person can comprehend."

I couldn't tear my eyes away from him, still in disbelief over what I had witnessed. But there was no denying it. Cole possessed some kind of supernatural power, one that allowed him to defy the laws of gravity. And if what he said was true, there were others like him out there.

"What do you mean, 'us'?" I finally managed to ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

Cole's gaze grew intense, as though he were contemplating whether or not to share the truth with me. After a moment, he nodded and gestured for me to follow him. "Come with me," he said, leading the way to a hidden alley nearby.

I hesitated for a moment before curiosity and a sense of adventure overwhelmed my better judgment. I followed Cole into the dimly lit passage, my heart pounding with anticipation and fear of the unknown.

As we walked, Cole began to unravel the secrets of the hidden world he had mentioned. "We are called the Watchers," he began, his voice low and earnest. "For centuries, we have existed in the shadows, guardians of this city and its secrets. We possess extraordinary abilities, born out of a mysterious energy that flows within us."

My mind was racing, trying to process everything. It sounded like something out of a fantastical novel, but I had witnessed Cole's power firsthand. It was real.

"Why are you telling me all this?" I asked, my voice filled with a mixture of awe and uncertainty.

Cole paused, turning to face me. His sad eyes bore into mine, revealing a vulnerability beneath his confident exterior. "Because, my friend, I sense that you have something within you. Something special."

I couldn't help but scoff at his words. I had always considered myself an average, ordinary person. But there was a tinge of hope that sparked within me, igniting a sense of purpose I had never experienced before.

"What do you mean?" I pressed, my curiosity overpowering my initial skepticism.

Cole smiled, his face lighting up for the first time since I had met him. "You possess a unique connection to the energy that flows through us. I believe you have the potential to become a Watcher, to join us in protecting this city from the forces of darkness."

My mind whirled with questions, doubts and fears mingling with the burgeoning excitement. Could I really be a part of something bigger than myself? Could I harness this hidden power within me?

Before I could respond, Cole held out his hand, a silent offering of trust and solidarity. "Take my hand," he said, his voice filled with quiet intensity. "And together, we can unlock your true potential."

In that moment, I made a choice. I reached out, my hand trembling slightly as it connected with his. The touch sent a surge of energy through me, a feeling of belonging and purpose that I had never experienced before.

As our hands clasped, a newfound sense of identity blossomed within me. Los Angeles would no longer be just a city I was assigned to for work. It would become the backdrop of an epic journey, a tale of discovery and destiny.

And so, hand in hand with Cole, I embarked on a path that would unveil a hidden world of extraordinary abilities, a world where the line between reality and fantasy blurred, and where the truest versions of ourselves awaited.
