"What a strange world," I thought.

I was sitting in the barracks, sweating at my desk as the sun slowly rose to its peak position. The heat was unbearable, but I had no choice but to endure it. Everyone was waiting for the ship's departure, and I especially could not afford to be late. As I looked outside at the vast expanse of sand and dust, I continued my thoughts:

"I am from a country of snow and ice. We do not have deserts like this."

Life on Earth had been difficult for me. I grew up with my parents in a small village by the sea, living off of whatever we could catch or grow on our own. It was hard work, but I enjoyed it because I loved the ocean as much as my parents did.

But then came the day that changed everything. Nearby volcanoes erupted and covered our entire region in ash and lava. Our entire village perished in minutes, including my parents. In that moment, all that mattered was survival; there was nothing else worth thinking about anymore. It took me days to make my way to a nearby city where they were desperately trying to evacuate people before the tide of death swallowed them whole.

I remember being surrounded by hundreds of other children who just wanted to live. They sobbed in tears, clinging desperately onto their last shreds of hope before being crushed by the wave of misfortune that enveloped us all. No one would escape unscathed, not even me. A woman approached me from within the crowd and told me that she could get me out of there if I followed her instructions exactly. She led me through back alleys and hallways until we arrived at a door that seemed strangely familiar to me. She quickly opened it and gestured for me to enter before closing it behind her once again. We were now alone in a brightly-lit room filled with strange machines and people wearing lab coats scurrying around everywhere looking busy as they frantically typed into their computers or spoke into their headsets. "This is a safe place," she said while pointing at a chair next to hers, "Sit here until someone comes to get you."

I did what she said and waited patiently while she inspected some papers on her desk while busying herself with various tasks until finally a man approached us both casually dressed in black pants and a white shirt with his hair neatly combed back into place; he looked like an ordinary businessman if anything else but for some reason my instincts told me otherwise. "Alright kid," he said with an unusually warm smile spreading across his face as he handed me over some papers from his briefcase before turning back towards the woman whom he addressed as Dr Greenfield. "Everything seems to be in order," he said before leaving without another word into one of the rooms adjacent to where we sat down together earlier on. "You can leave him here," he added over his shoulder as he departed from where we both stood awaiting his arrival just moments ago, "He'll be taken care of from now on."

The woman turned toward me after seeing him close the door behind him after saying those words and smiled tenderly while handing me an apple out of her pocket which she produced seemingly out of nowhere just seconds ago; how did she do that? Before I could ask her any questions however she spoke up first: "Don't eat this right now but save it for later," she said mysteriously before walking away herself towards another door leaving me alone once again wondering what might happen next; how long would I stay here? Did anyone ever make it out alive after surviving such tragedy? Questions began piling up inside my head faster than answers could be found until finally Dr Greenfield returned carrying something inside a plastic bag which she held up against her chest protectively before speaking up once again: "Here take this," she said handing me over the plastic bag before continuing: "It's your ticket home." Before I could say anything however she added: "And don't lose it!"

I looked at the plastic bag in my hands, a mixture of curiosity and fear swirling within me. What did she mean by 'ticket home'? Where was this ticket taking me? The unknown weighed heavily on my mind as Dr. Greenfield returned to her desk, focused on her work once more. I hesitated for a moment, torn between the safety of the familiar - staying put within the confines of this strange sanctuary - or taking a leap of faith into the great unknown.

The decision gnawed at me relentlessly, and as the minutes ticked by, I found it impossible to ignore the siren call of adventure. I couldn't simply wait here, cocooned in this sterile environment, forever. With a newfound determination, I stood up from the chair, clutching the plastic bag tightly. Dr. Greenfield noticed my movement and looked up, surprise etching her face.

"Where are you going?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.

"I can't stay here forever," I replied, my voice steady despite the twinge of uncertainty within me. "I need to find out what lies beyond these walls, beyond the ashes that swallowed my home."

Dr. Greenfield regarded me with a mix of understanding and apprehension. After a moment, she nodded. "I can't force you to stay. Just promise me this," she said, her eyes softening. "If you ever find yourself in danger, return here. We will do everything we can to protect you."

I nodded, gratitude welling up within me. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice filled with sincerity.

With that, I turned away from Dr. Greenfield and the sanctuary that had provided me with shelter in this strange new world. I stepped through the door, the weight of uncertainty settling upon my shoulders. As I ventured into the unknown, my heart thrummed with a mix of fear and youthful excitement. The sun beat down upon the arid landscape, casting long shadows across the endless desert. Each step I took was a step closer to unraveling the mysteries of this strange world.

Days melted into weeks as I traversed the unforgiving terrain, relying on the minimal supplies I had been given. The plastic bag that held my 'ticket home' became my lifeline, and I guarded it with my life. As the scorching heat drained my energy, and the sand infiltrated every crevice of my clothing, doubt began to gnaw at my resolve.

But just as my morale reached its lowest point, I stumbled upon a dilapidated structure half-buried in the sand. The remnants of what once might have been a grand city loomed before me, a testament to a forgotten civilization. Intrigued, I cautiously entered the crumbling ruins, the echo of my footsteps blending with the whispers of the wind.

The air within the ruins was heavy with the weight of history. Golden light streamed through the cracks in the walls, casting an ethereal glow on the remnants of a long-lost world. I couldn't help but be drawn deeper into the maze of forgotten corridors and decaying halls.

As I wandered through the ruins, a faint sound caught my attention—a soft humming that seemed to emanate from a distant chamber. My curiosity piqued, I followed the melody, my steps taking on renewed energy. With each turn, the humming grew louder, intertwining with an enchanting harmony that tugged at my heart.

Finally, I reached the source of the music—an intricately adorned chamber, untouched by time. A radiant figure sat at a grand piano, their fingers dancing across the keys with effortless grace. Their face was veiled, shrouded in an air of mystery that left my heart racing. The music flowed from their fingertips, enveloping the chamber in a hauntingly beautiful melody.

Entranced, I moved closer, drawn towards the unseen musician. With each note, memories of home flooded my mind—the smell of the sea, the warmth of my parents' embraces. Tears welled in my eyes, a poignant mix of joy and sorrow.

The figure halted their playing, the final notes lingering in the air. Slowly, they turned towards me, their veil slipping away to reveal a face that mirrored my own.

"You've finally found your way, my child," they said, their voice a gentle melody that sung to my soul. "Welcome to the forgotten city."

My heart trembled with recognition, for in that moment, I realized that the forgotten city was not just a relic of the past but a gateway to the answers I had sought. The mysteries of my own existence and the fate of my parents were intricately woven into the tapestry of this ancient place.

And so, I stood in the forgotten city, the crescendo of my journey singing its haunting tune. The gentle hands of destiny beckoned, promising revelations and a reunion with my past. With newfound determination, I took a step forward, ready to unearth the secrets that lay buried beneath the shifting sands.
