*The Castle*
My sister, Ana, was taken. Through my father's own stupidity, he had let the king of the Opiricu kingdom have her. It was a tragic mistake, the deciding factor of the war between our countries that had not been won for centuries. We were on the losing end of it, and I knew that if something wasn't done soon, then all hope would be lost.
The only thing keeping us alive as a country was Ana herself. She was the princess, heir to the throne of both universes: ours and theirs--the humans and the Opiricu. The two worlds had coexisted for centuries before the split in their people into two opposing camps: The human race and the Opiricu.
I felt like I had spent half my life waiting for this moment, for my chance to prove myself worthy of being a prince. I was tired of being treated like a child just because I was younger than my sister by seven years.
We didn't have enough time to gather troops or plan an attack. My father wouldn't even listen to reason when it came to Ana marrying the king and ending the war once and for all. He thought he could get them to see sense, but instead, he'd given them a bargaining chip to use against us.
"Rachael! Open up!"
I shook my head at Ana's incessant pounding on my door. "Fine," I muttered under my breath as I unlocked the door.
"Finally," Ana said as she stormed in behind me. "Olly's here! You ready?" she asked me quickly as she started straightening out her dress and fixing her hair up in a bun with that stupid crown she insisted on wearing everywhere.
I rolled my eyes at her as she continued fussing in front of the mirror while I got ready myself--just slipping on a plain blue shirt with some jeans--nothing fancy really considering we were going to go take back what they stole from us after all. Why bother? They would probably just ruin whatever I wore anyway once we arrived there anyway--what was even left at our castle to ruin after they took over?
A knock sounded at our door just as Ana finished getting herself ready, making her jump slightly while pushing back her hair nervously after looking through her small mirror one last time before she opened it up to greet their guest.
To my surprise, standing at the threshold was not Olly, but a man I had never seen before. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with a weathered face that showed a lifetime of battles. His eyes were a piercing shade of blue, the kind that seemed to see right through you.
"Who are you?" I asked, my hand instinctively reaching for the dagger strapped to my belt.
The man's gaze shifted towards me, his eyes narrowing. "I am Silas," he replied solemnly, his voice deep and resonant. "And I'm here to help you rescue Princess Ana."
Ana gasped at the mention of her name. "How do you know who I am?" she demanded, but her voice wavered with a hint of hope.
"I have my sources," Silas said cryptically, his gaze shifting between the both of us. "But we don't have much time. The castle is heavily guarded, and they will not hesitate to kill anyone who tries to enter."
"What can we do?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Silas reached into the folds of his cloak and produced a small vial filled with a murky liquid. "This is a potion," he explained. "It will grant you the ability to turn invisible for a short period of time. It should give you a chance to slip past the guards unnoticed."
Without hesitation, Ana reached out to take the vial from Silas. "Thank you," she murmured, her voice filled with gratitude.
Silas nodded, his expression grave. "Remember, princess, once you find your sister, leave the castle immediately. The Opiricu will not allow you both to escape without a fight."
I felt a pang of fear in my chest, but I quickly pushed it aside. This was the moment I had been waiting for, the chance to prove myself to my sister, to my father, and to our kingdom.
As we made our way towards the castle, the night air was heavy with tension. Every step we took was fraught with danger, each shadow holding the possibility of a lurking enemy. Silas led the way, his cloak billowing behind him as if guided by an invisible force. It seemed almost magical, his ability to navigate the castle grounds with ease.
We slipped through the castle gates, the guards oblivious to our presence. The grand halls were eerily quiet, the usual bustling of the Opiricu absent. The air was thick with the scent of burning candles, giving the castle an eerie glow.
Silas led us through winding corridors and hidden passages, until finally, we reached a set of ornate double doors. Behind them, we could hear muffled voices and the sound of hushed laughter.
Ana gripped my hand tightly, her eyes shining with determination. "Let's do this," she whispered, before pushing the doors open.
As we entered the room, the sight before us was both heartbreaking and infuriating. My father, the king, sat on his throne, a look of resignation etched on his face. And there, standing beside him, was the King of the Opiricu, a smug smile playing across his lips.
"Father!" Ana cried out, her voice filled with both relief and anger. "How could you?"
My father's gaze met Ana's, and I saw tears welling up in his eyes. "I did this to protect our kingdom," he said quietly. "I had no choice."
Rage simmered within me, but before I could react, the King of the Opiricu raised his hand, silencing us all.
"Princess Ana," he said, his voice dripping with arrogance. "Your sister is a mere bargaining chip. If you want her back, you must agree to my terms."
My heart pounded in my chest as I listened to his demands. The weight of our entire kingdom rested on Ana's decision. And as I looked into her eyes, I knew that she would not let us down. She was our last hope, our beacon of light in a world consumed by darkness.
And so, with a determined glint in her eyes, Ana made her choice. We would fight for our freedom, for our kingdom, for everything we held dear. And together, with Silas by our side, we would reclaim what was rightfully ours and bring an end to this long and bitter war.
