Jerry and Elle's Perfect Timing

He was genuinely surprised when she finally broke up with him.

He didn't think someone like Elle would ever even consider it. He just thought they were happy together, and she really liked him, and that's what he loved about her. Elle was always full of life, and Jerry knew he was different from most people but she liked that about him. She was the only person in this big city who understood him. The only one who looked past his shyness, past his awkwardness and actually took an interest in what he had to say. She wasn't some fake friend or a bitchy socialite trying to use him for his money. She wasn't a gold digger, she was perfect for him. And he loved her for it.

But now that was over, because she left him. Days ago, she packed up all of her things and stormed out of his apartment without saying a word. He never saw it coming. Marty was there too when it happened, but he didn't know what to do either. They both sat on the couch watching TV, Jerry's favorite show was on and they were laughing at how stupid the jokes were when Elle walked into the room with two suitcases in hand and tears streaming down her face. She ran towards Jerry and told him to get off the couch so she could lay down while she waited for Marty to take her home in his car. Jerry did as he was told and sat back down next to his friend on the couch until Elle broke down crying into her hands again.

"Elle," Jerry said softly as he put a hand on her shoulder. "What's wrong?"

She took a deep breath and wiped her tears away before looking up at him with red eyes. "Jerry...I can't do this anymore." Her voice cracked as she spoke, making it hard for Jerry to hear what she said next: "I can't be your girlfriend."

Jerry felt like he couldn't breathe for a second. She couldn't be serious, could she? After everything they've been through? What did he do? What did they do wrong? He thought everything was perfect!

"Why?" He whispered after an agonizing pause, "Was it something I did?"

Elle shook her head slowly before answering: "No...it's me." She closed her eyes as if remembering something painful before opening them again with more tears flowing down her cheeks. "I never meant for anything like this to happen..." Her voice cracked again as she sobbed quietly into her hands before looking up at Jerry again with pleading eyes full of guilt: "I'm so sorry."

Jerry felt like someone just stabbed him in the chest over and over again while simultaneously breaking every bone in his body with a hammer at the same time. The pain overwhelmed him suddenly like nothing ever had before, causing him to collapse onto the floor next to Elle as his mind went blank and blackness overcame him. He woke up hours later only to find himself in bed with a splitting headache as Marty stared back at him worriedly from his spot at the end of the bed near his feet where Elle usually slept on nights they stayed over together.

They didn't discuss the details of what transpired that day. Yet, somehow both found solace in each other's presence during their sleepless night. Each heartbeat served as reassurance, a reminder that they were not alone. Silently, they shared their emotions, their fears, and their love for one another. Sometimes, words were not required for complete understanding; sometimes, silence spoke volumes.

As morning approached, Elle kissed Jerry goodbye and returned to her own home, with a glimmer of hope sparking within her. Hope allows us to live another day, even without knowing what the future may hold. Because in the end, hope is what keeps us going.
