Gudrun and the Guardian Cat
·
Published 5/7/2023When Gudrun, the benevolent yet resourceful woman from the Medieval Nordic fishing village, teams up with her mysterious pet cat to uncover a hidden mystery, they face an unexpected adversary but ultimately restore harmony to the coastline and its people.

Gudrun was a simple woman who lived on the coast. She lived in a small hut with her cat, which she had named Sven.
One day, she was sitting outside her home, whittling at a stick with her knife. Sven was purring at her feet when he suddenly hissed and darted off. Gudrun sighed and put her knife aside; her stomach was growling because it was lunchtime and she had not brought anything to eat into the house that morning. She got up and followed Sven down the road.
Sven led her to an old man who was lying on his back in the middle of the road with his eyes closed. The man had curled into the fetal position, although he looked as if all his bones had been broken and he could not move at all.
Gudrun crouched down next to him, wondering why he would be there in such a way.
"Is he dead?" She asked Sven, who just continued to stare at the old man out of the corner of one eye while still sniffing the ground around them suspiciously. "Sven?" Gudrun repeated, this time louder so that she might startle him into an answer, but it did nothing for him but cause him to jump slightly and glare at her with his other eye before looking away again. "Fine then," she muttered as she reached out a hand to touch the old man's cheek lightly with one finger.
He immediately opened his eyes and grabbed her wrist, tightening his grip until tears sprang to hers, before releasing it abruptly and rolling over so that he lay on his stomach again with his face turned toward hers.
"How did you know I wasn't dead?" He asked curiously as he began to sit up by pushing himself up on his arms and legs. "Because Sven wouldn't have approached you otherwise."
Sven huffed indignantly as he stalked back to where Gudrun sat watching them both with anticipation on her face for what would happen next. "I'm not going to kill you," the old man assured her after getting himself upright without help from either of them. "Although I am surprised no one has killed you yet." He took a step closer to Gudrun until their noses were almost touching before bowing low and kissing her hand gently with closed eyes. "It is an honor to meet you." He straightened up again after kissing her hand once more before extending it out toward Sven, who sniffed it cautiously before rubbing against it happily while purring loudly enough that Gudrun could hear even though they were standing some distance apart. The old man smiled at them both as if they were friends instead of strangers before turning back toward Gudrun again. "I am Leifr," he told her simply as he bowed again politely toward her. "And you are?" He cocked an eyebrow up questioningly at her when she didn't immediately respond because of surprise at his behavior instead of answering him right away like most people would have done given the situation they had just met each other in.
"I-I'm-" Gudrun stammered as she tried to think of something believable to say about herself without letting on how long ago she had actually been born or where she had lived previously before settling on saying, "My name is Gudrun." She knew that if anyone in the village ever asked about her background, it would be best if she didn't give any details beyond what little information she had given them so far. Most people wouldn't believe someone who couldn't remember their entire life story any more than they would believe in ghosts or spirits despite having seen one themselves or knowing someone else who had experienced some paranormal phenomena firsthand.
As Gudrun continued to converse with Leifr, she felt a sense of unease. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, but she couldn't quite pinpoint what it was. There was an air of mystery surrounding Leifr, and she felt as if her encounter with him would change her life forever.
"I have been searching for something," Leifr explained, "I thought I may have left it here, but it seems I was mistaken. However, our meeting has not been in vain, Gudrun. I sense you may be able to help me in my quest."
Intrigued and uncertain, Gudrun agreed to help Leifr, unaware of what this alliance would bring. As they began their journey together, she couldn't help but wonder how their strange encounter came to be and what surprises lay ahead in their combined path.
