Published 5/26/2023Desperate to fix the data glitch that's ruined her project, a tech-savvy young woman faces a race against time to undo the catastrophic error before her entire career is destroyed.

"What do you mean it 'doesn't matter'? You made me get this freaking thing!" I spat out, just as furious as ever.
My fiancée, Mary, looked down at the ring that was now lying in her hand. It glistened in the light and sparkled like nothing I had ever seen before. She sighed, then looked back up at me with a mixture of pity and resentment. "Because we don't need it anymore."
"Of course we need it! We're getting married! We're not having any kids yet, but it doesn't mean I'm going to stop loving you when we have them! It doesn't mean that I'm going to stop loving you if something happens to me! Are you saying that you're going to stop loving me if something happens to you?" My voice rose louder and louder until I was yelling at her. The entire restaurant was staring at us, I couldn't care less. They all just wanted to mind their own business, but nosiness often took precedence for them.
Mary looked even more frustrated than before and she threw the ring across the table. It clattered loudly against the glass top of the table. Her hands were balled into fists and her face was red with anger as well. "I am not saying anything about what will happen if one of us dies or anything like that, Jason! But there is no point in having a wedding ring anymore!" She had tears threatening to escape from her eyes now and she tried her best to calm herself down before speaking again. "We can still be married without it."
I stared at her blankly for a few moments before I realized what she had said. No wedding ring? How are we supposed to be married without rings? What's the point of getting married without rings? "Are you truly serious, Mary? What kind of marriage is that? How are we supposed to be husband and wife without rings?"
She wiped away a tear before replying in a shaky voice, "It's just a piece of jewelry, Jason. That's all." She stood up and walked out of the restaurant while wiping away more tears from her cheeks. A waiter quickly ran over and picked up the ring from where she had thrown it on the table earlier before walking in my direction. He handed me the box with one hand while using the other to signal for me to leave before he grabbed my shoulder firmly and guided me outside after Mary.
Once outside, I looked around for Mary but couldn't find her anywhere near where she had been sitting previously. I started walking down the street as fast as I could, trying my hardest not to trip over my own feet or look foolish by running blindly down the street after my fiancée. There weren't many people on this road, so hopefully, I would spot her soon enough and maybe be able to apologize for my outburst just now. She probably thinks that I don't love her anymore based on how angry I was just then, but I don't know why she would think that way when I've always been as loyal to her as possible whenever we've been together over these past few years since we met each other in high school.
Just then, I noticed two familiar figures standing under a tree near some bushes along the side of the road several meters away from where I currently was standing. One figure seemed much taller than the other one who seemed almost short in comparison, and there wasn't anyone else around here, so those two must be...
They were kissing each other passionately underneath the tree near the bushes, and both of them seemed completely oblivious to everything around them except for each other's embrace. Witnessing the intensity of their passion made me feel self-conscious.
No wonder Mary wants nothing more than a simple piece of jewelry instead of flamboyant wedding rings! Regardless of whether or not people know who bought what item for whom on occasions like Christmas or Valentine's Day, there's no need to flaunt ostentatious symbols of love when genuine feelings are more than enough to sustain a relationship. As long as a couple remains true to each other throughout all the moments they share in life, it does not matter what trinkets they possess. True love is the bond that ties two souls together, and nothing can overshadow that.
