"I am dreaming," Jonathan thought as his eyes slowly opened. "I'm sure I am. I just need to wake up." He tried to move his arms, but they were caught in something. He tried to move his feet and realized he was bound.

"What the hell?" he said aloud. A shadowy figure stood before him, holding a long thin object that looked like a stick or a sword. Jonathan could barely make out his face in the dim light. It was not human, but it also did not resemble any animal Jonathan had ever seen. The creature's eyes glowed red and its mouth was open, showing rows of sharp teeth, dripping drool. The thing raised its sword and started to charge at him. Jonathan screamed, but no sound came out of his mouth.

He then felt himself being shaken by some unknown force and he opened his eyes again, to see his wife Lily peering at him with a worried look on her face. "Jonathan," she said, shaking him by the shoulders, "are you okay? You're sweating like crazy." She turned on the lamp next to their bed and took a tissue from the nightstand to dab Jonathan's forehead with it. "I have never seen you sweat this much."

"I think I might be sick," Jonathan muttered, looking around the room for some clue about where he was. "Where is this place?" He pushed away Lily's hand as she tried to wipe his forehead with the tissue again. "Who are you?" he asked hoarsely. "How did I get here?"

Lily looked confused by his questions and only leaned closer towards him. She smelled like lilac shampoo and coconut lotion, familiar smells that immediately made Jonathan feel better and brought some sense back into his mind. "You're home," she said calmly, settling herself on the edge of the bed while still holding onto one of his hands with hers. "We're in our bedroom in our house."

Jonathan turned his head towards her as though he could not believe what he heard her say. He squinted at her for a couple of seconds then closed his eyes again as if all strength had left him at once. Lily felt alarmed at that reaction and again started rubbing his forehead gently with the tissue she grabbed from the nightstand earlier on her way towards the bedside table. "How do you feel now?" she asked softly after awhile when it seemed to her that her husband had fallen asleep again without saying another word.

Jonathan woke up several times during that night and each time he looked around confusedly for a few minutes before falling asleep again next to Lily who was sleeping peacefully beside him in their double bed. At first light Lily finally noticed that Jonathan's temperature had gone down significantly so she decided to let him sleep until they both woke up naturally later in the day when their children would be home from school anyway. As soon as she got out of bed Lily told herself that she would call her mother-in-law later to talk about what happened last night; maybe Mrs Davis could shed some light on what was going on with her son-in-law because Lily certainly did not know how else to help him except by being there for him whenever he needed someone to talk too or needed someone to listen patiently while he talked too much instead of actually listening to whatever it was he wanted to tell them about lately by constantly repeating himself over and over again without getting anywhere near a conclusion or solution for whatever problems he seemed determined not to solve for himself so far despite all her efforts, encouragement and support trying hard not to worry too much about it believing that everything would work out fine in time eventually just like it always did if only she could find patience enough not to nag or lecture Jonathan too much now that she knew from past experience how easily such behavior could push him further away from them instead of bringing him closer instead because of its unintended negative effect on him instead forcing him even further into isolation making everything worse instead of better which was exactly what she did not want now especially after last night's frightening episode because even though Lily remained convinced that everything would work out fine eventually somehow between them eventually kind of hoping that Mrs Davis would be able to convince Jonathan otherwise because although Lily believed in her own ability to solve problems they were having together as a couple right now just like they solved many problems together successfully before finding ways around those problems together as a family members before so far except this one big problem between them right now which seemed too big right now for Lily alone at least within such a short period of time so far more than ever before without success yet hopefully Mrs Davis might have more luck convincing Jonathan otherwise sooner rather than later because if not...then...

...then Lily didn't know what would happen. She couldn't bear the thought of Jonathan spiraling further into whatever dark place he seemed to be trapped in. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing thoughts and anxiety, and decided to call her mother-in-law right away.

As the phone rang on the other end, Lily couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. Mrs. Davis had always been a pillar of strength for their family, especially during difficult times. She was wise and understanding, and Lily prayed that she would have some insight into Jonathan's unsettling behavior.

"Hello, Lily. What a surprise," Mrs. Davis's warm voice filled the line. Lily took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts before speaking.

"Hi, Mom. I'm sorry to bother you so early, but something strange happened last night, and I don't know what to do. Jonathan... he woke up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat, completely disoriented. He didn't even recognize me at first," Lily explained, her voice wavering with worry.

There was a moment of silence on the other end, and Lily's heart sank as she feared her mother-in-law wouldn't have any answers. But then Mrs. Davis let out a deep sigh, and her voice was filled with concern.

"Oh, my dear Lily. I was hoping this wouldn't happen so soon," she said, her voice tinged with sadness. "Listen to me carefully. What Jonathan experienced last night might be a symptom of... something much deeper."

Lily's curiosity sparked, and she clutched the phone tighter. "What do you mean, Mom? What could be causing this? Is there a way to help him?"

Mrs. Davis paused, as if choosing her words carefully. "Lily, in our family, there has always been a predisposition to a condition called lucid dreaming. It's a phenomenon where one becomes aware that they are dreaming and can sometimes have difficulty distinguishing between dreams and reality."

Lily felt a chill run down her spine. It was as if a puzzle piece had slotted into place, painting a clearer picture of what Jonathan might be going through. "But how... how is this possible? I've never heard of it before."

"It's not something we talk about openly, my dear," Mrs. Davis admitted. "It's a burden we've carried in silence, passed down through generations. Your father went through a similar period when we were young, but he eventually found a way to manage it."

Lily's mind raced, searching for answers. "What can we do, Mom? How can we help Jonathan?"

"I can guide you through this, Lily, but it won't be easy," Mrs. Davis cautioned. "Lucid dreaming can sometimes lead to vivid nightmares and a distorted sense of reality. But with patience and understanding, there is hope. I will teach you the techniques we've learned over the years to ground Jonathan in his waking life and help him navigate his dreams."

Relief washed over Lily. Finally, there was a glimmer of hope, a way forward. "Thank you, Mom," she whispered shakily. "I'll do whatever it takes to help Jonathan through this. We'll get through it together, just like we always have."

Over the following weeks, Mrs. Davis became Lily's mentor, guiding her through the intricacies of lucid dreaming and providing invaluable support. Together, they worked tirelessly to help Jonathan anchor himself in reality and differentiate between his dreams and waking life.

With their combined efforts, Jonathan slowly regained control over his lucid dreams, no longer waking up disoriented and terrified. Lily continued to be his anchor, reminding him of their love and their life together, even in the midst of his most challenging dreamscapes.

As time went on, Jonathan became more adept at recognizing when he was dreaming and could even manipulate his dreams to some extent. He discovered a newfound sense of wonder and creativity, using his dreams as a canvas to explore the deepest corners of his subconscious.

With each passing day, Lily and Jonathan grew stronger both as individuals and as a couple. The trials they faced together only deepened their bond and taught them the importance of resilience and unwavering support.

And though the shadows of lucid dreaming would always loom in the background, they knew that as long as they faced it head-on, armed with love and understanding, they could overcome anything that came their way. Their love had become the shelter within the storm, a beacon of light guiding them through the surreal landscapes of Jonathan's dreams.
