Tik-Tok crouched in the shadows, watching the clocktower with a mix of awe and trepidation. It loomed over the city, its spires reaching toward the sky like fingers beckoning to a forbidden treasure. And that's exactly what it was: a treasure beyond imagination, hidden deep within its labyrinthine halls.

The clockwork heart.

Legends spoke of its power, said to be capable of granting immense wealth and eternal life to whoever heard its tick. Tik-Tok had heard enough stories in their time as a thief to take them all with a grain of salt. But there was something different about this one. Something that made their own heart hammer in their chest at the mere thought of it.

This was their chance, they knew. The chance to rise above the rest of the scum and filth that crowded these streets. The chance to never worry about where their next meal would come from or whether they'd live to see tomorrow.

All they had to do was get past whatever traps and guards protected the heart, take it for themselves, and get out without anyone ever knowing they were there.

Simple enough.

Tik-Tok shook off their doubts and took a deep breath. They'd been planning this heist for weeks now; there was no room for uncertainty. Besides, if everything went according to plan - a big if - they'd never have to steal another thing again.

They crept through the alleyways until they reached the clocktower's shadowed base. The entrance wasn't hard to find; it was marked by an ancient stone tablet covered in faded glyphs that Tik-Tok couldn't decipher even if their life depended on it (which it might). What mattered was that one particular glyph glowed faintly as they approached: an arrow pointing upward.

"That can't be good," Tik-Tok muttered under their breath.

They glanced around nervously before stepping into the tower, pausing for a moment to let their eyes adjust to the dim light. The air smelled of dust and oil, with an undercurrent of something sweet and intoxicating. Tik-Tok shook their head to clear it; they couldn't afford any distractions now.

They pulled out a small brass key, the only tool they'd need for this part of the job, and approached the nearest clock. It was a massive thing, its gears and cogs visible through a glass front. Tik-Tok ignored them and focused on the tiny lock at the bottom of the clock face. With a deft twist of their wrist, it sprung open.

"Tick-tock," said a voice from inside.

Tik-Tok froze, heart pounding in their chest. They strained to hear any other sounds over the frantic thumping in their ears but heard nothing. They peered into the clock's innards, half expecting to see someone staring back at them.

But there was nothing there.

"Just my imagination," they muttered, trying not to let their relief show. "Get it together."

They removed the clock's hands - three minutes past midnight - and replaced them with ones that glowed in the dark. Then they moved onto the next clock. And then the next.

As they worked their way deeper into the tower, Tik-Tok's confidence grew. This was easier than they'd thought it would be; maybe all those stories were just that - stories. Maybe there really were no traps or guards protecting...

The floor dropped out from beneath them before they could finish that thought.

Tik-Tok yelped as gravity took hold, hurtling them downward through blackness so thick it felt like syrup on their skin. They flailed desperately until something solid caught hold of their hand and brought them to an abrupt stop.

They hung there for several heart-stopping moments before a weak glow illuminated their surroundings: a massive clock face, the gears and cogs behind it dwarfing Tik-Tok in size. They followed the faint light to its source and breathed a sigh of relief.

The glowing hands they'd just installed on the clock were still attached to their wrists.

"Could be worse," they murmured, trying not to think about how it could also be a lot better.

With a grunt of effort, they pulled themselves up onto the clock's surface and crawled over its edge. The next floor awaited them below, shrouded in darkness that seemed somehow thicker than before.

Tik-Tok took a deep breath. The hard part was just beginning.
