"The poor have it so bad that they can't feel anything," Ghanshyam said.

"Ghanshyam, can you please stop being such a snob?" Ashish asked. "It's the same thing you always say."

"Maybe, but I mean it, man. Poor people are so numb to happiness and sadness and fear, because they don't experience them as much. It's all just blah."

That was a stupid argument. Ghanshyam had heard of what was called emotional tourism, where someone goes and experiences the emotions of another person who has undergone an intense experience. Some people said it was phony and made them feel worse than before, others said it was real and is therapeutic. Some even went as far as to say that it is cheating on your partner to go on an emotional vacation with another person.

Ashish preferred the term "mental health tourism". He thought emotional travel was bullshit, if it worked at all, because the person you're experiencing emotions from has already lived through those feelings, so it isn't like you're sharing in the stress at all. Mental health tourism was better because then you could watch someone's life unfold and learn from their mistakes. They didn't call it emotional tourism for nothing; after all, when you watch someone else's dreams come true, you feel happy for them too!

Ghanshyam didn't care about any of that; he just wanted to see what it was really like to be happy or sad or angry or scared or anything. He didn't want to share emotions; he wanted to live them. So he tried this illegal underground app that let him actually experience the emotion of another person directly into his brain without going through the usual proxy: a neural implant in his brain that synced up with other traveler's implants and stimulated his brain based on the current state of their brain. He didn't know how many people were using this app; he hadn't told anyone about his travels except Ashish because he knew Ashish wouldn't judge him for being a criminal user of technology (but he would tell everyone about him if Ghanshyam died). The tech only took about 30 minutes for installation by an illegal technician (who never took more than 5 minutes to do so), but then Ghanshyam sent his contacts money to buy the app from its creator (who lived somewhere in Finland according to rumors). The payments were untraceable so no one knew who bought the app from whom anymore; all they knew was that some guy kept making new versions of this pirate app every day, and somehow everyone was downloading it each time!

One day Ghanshyam told Ashish about his plans to use the pirate app again. He couldn't do it right then because he had just finished watching someone else's mental health tourism trip and he needed time away from other people before doing another one himself.

"I'm going to kill myself today," Ghanshyam told Ashish when they met up later that day. "I need a break."

"What? Why?" asked Ashish. "You seemed fine when we talked last night!"

"Yeah but I watched someone else live through depression yesterday," said Ghanshyam. "I just need a break from everything."

"Oh," said Ashish. He felt guilty for not doing anything for his friend after hearing about his problems earlier in the day; he should've realized something was wrong! "Do you need help?"

"No," said Ghanshyam firmly. "I'll be fine." He paused for a moment before adding: "But if I die today, please remember me." And with that, he walked away from his friend and headed towards the nearest bridge over a river close by wherever they were at that moment, leaving Ashish confused behind him.

Ashish stood frozen in disbelief as he watched Ghanshyam's retreating figure. The weight of his friend's words echoed in his mind, replaying the desperate plea for remembrance. Ashish's heart pounded against his chest as he sprinted after Ghanshyam, frantic to prevent a tragedy.

"Wait! Ghanshyam, please!" Ashish called out, his voice cracking with desperation. But Ghanshyam kept walking, oblivious to his friend's pleas. Ashish's mind raced, searching for a solution. He couldn't lose Ghanshyam, not without a fight.

Without a second thought, Ashish fumbled for his phone and dialed the emergency services. The call rang into place, and Ashish quickly explained the situation to the dispatcher, providing their location and Ghanshyam's intentions.

Breathless and filled with an agonizing mix of fear and determination, Ashish pursued Ghanshyam across the bustling streets. The shrieks of car horns and distant conversations became a blur as he focused solely on catching up to his friend.

Finally, Ashish reached the bridge just as Ghanshyam stood at its precipice. The weight of the moment bore down on Ashish, and he felt the chilling grip of despair tighten around his heart. But he couldn't let Ghanshyam slip away. Not without a fight.

"Ghanshyam, please," Ashish implored, his voice trembling. "I can't let you do this. You're not alone. I'm here for you."

For a brief, suspended moment, Ghanshyam seemed to hesitate, his body frozen at the edge. Ashish saw the turmoil etched onto his friend's face, the tears shimmering in his eyes. Time seemed to stretch, as if the universe itself held its breath.

Then, with a trembling sigh, Ghanshyam turned towards Ashish. His expression filled with profound sadness and vulnerability. "I...I didn't think you'd come," he murmured, his voice barely audible against the backdrop of the rushing river.

Ashish's heart clenched at the raw honesty in Ghanshyam's words. With cautious steps, he approached, closing the distance between them. "Of course, I came," he said, his voice steady with determination. "I'll always be here for you, no matter what."

Tears welled in Ghanshyam's eyes as he reached out, wrapping his arms around Ashish in a tight embrace. It was as if the weight of the world lifted off his shoulders, replaced with the solace of genuine connection. And in that moment, both friends realized the tremendous power of human compassion and the strength it held to shape their lives.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Ashish never left Ghanshyam's side, providing unwavering support, understanding, and love. Together, they navigated the complexities of life, finding solace in their shared moments of joy and forging a bond that transcended the binary notions of rich and poor, happy and sad.

Through their collective strength, Ashish and Ghanshyam became advocates for mental health awareness in their community. They organized workshops and support groups, fostering an environment of compassion and empathy. Their unwavering dedication reached far and wide, attracting attention from local media and influential figures who recognized the profound difference they were making.

As the years passed, Ashish and Ghanshyam's friendship became an indomitable force, a guiding light for others who found themselves lost in the turmoil of emotion. They continued to impact lives, helping people find their strength, their voice, and their purpose.

And while Ghanshyam's longing to experience emotions firsthand never truly left him, he discovered that the connection he shared with Ashish and the countless individuals they helped was enough to fill the void. He understood that happiness, sadness, fear, and love were not exclusive to one's circumstances. Instead, these emotions showed themselves in the connections, the bonds, and the shared moments that tied humanity together.

Ghanshyam and Ashish became living proof that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit could prevail, weaving a tapestry of empathy that enveloped all who were willing to embrace it. Their story, a testament to resilience and compassion, spread like wildfire, inspiring others to believe in the power of connection and the profound impact of understanding.

The poor no longer existed as a faceless, nameless entity to be pitied but a vibrant community that thrived through resilience. Ghanshyam and Ashish's legacy became a catalyst for change, breaking the barriers that divided society and ushering in a new era of empathy and understanding.
