Quest for the Dragon's Honor (or Quest to Free the Dragon)
·
Published 5/31/2023In a distant 2nd century BCE kingdom, a valiant young knight, sly wizard, and two resourceful villagers journey together through treacherous subterranean depths to save a dragon from captivity, questioning their bravery but emboldened by fantastical creatures to battle mighty foes and ultimately restore harmony between humans and dragons.

"I tell you! It's true!" shouted the old man. He was waving his arms in the air, "You must believe me!"
The crowd jeered and laughed at him. They had heard this story a million times. Hell, they'd seen the old man himself a million times. He always has some stupid sob story about dragons and magic and whatever else he could dream up to try and get money from them.
"Look," said one of the townspeople to the old man, "We've all heard your story before." The crowd murmured in agreement.
"That's right! You've told it two or three times this week alone! We don't believe you!"
"Why should we believe you?! It's all nonsense!"
An elderly woman approached him, "Here, take this coin and go away." She handed him a coin and he pocketed it quickly. He looked down at her and thanked her. He turned around and walked out of the little pub where he had been telling his story to everyone that would listen.
He walked out of the pub and into the street. It was late afternoon, but most people were still out on the street. A fat man in a blue tunic stood next to him and stumbled forward as another man bumped into him from behind. The fat man went tumbling onto his stomach and began cursing loudly. Everyone around laughed at him as he picked himself up off of the ground.
The old man kept walking down the narrow street until he came to an intersection with a much larger street running through it. There was a small store there, its sign hanging over the entrance read simply: "Merchant".
As always, there was a small line forming in front of it with people waiting to buy their daily supplies from inside. The old man shuffled over to the back of the line behind a young couple who had their arms wrapped around each other. He looked up at them as they stood there giggling quietly to themselves while holding hands. Then he looked around at all of the other people standing in line behind them with bored looks on their faces as they waited for their turn to buy something from inside of the shop. He sighed loudly enough for everyone around him to hear it.
When it was finally his turn, he approached one of the shop owners standing behind the counter and said politely, "Hello sir, could I have one of those?" The shop owner smiled at him and took one of the items off of its display stand on top of his counter. Then he handed it over to the old man along with some coins that were neatly piled nearby next to a pot of writing ink.
The availability of writing instruments and ink, once considered essential tools for everyday life, seemed to have greatly diminished in recent years, as most people didn't find the need or opportunity to use them anymore. The gradual shift in societal norms had likely contributed to this change, leaving many to not question the reasons behind their behaviors or beliefs, opting to simply follow the status quo. In this ever-changing world, the feeling of living with a certain sense of urgency and stress became common, making it hard for individuals to focus on deeper concerns – such as aging and personal growth – rather than just keeping up appearances and following routine.
However, to the old man, these changes seemed largely inconsequential, for his thoughts were occupied with storytelling and attempting to captivate whoever would listen. As he left the shop more supplies in hand and coins jingling in his pocket, he contemplated what his adventures that night would hold. Who would he meet? Would they listen? And ultimately, would any of them, for even a single moment, believe him?
