Shadows of Desire

"I don't see why you're so angry, Cindy. It's a simple misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding that nearly got me killed!"

"But, you're fine now! Look at you, healthy as an ox!"

Cindy rolled her eyes at her new husband, Nickey, who had been trying to make up for his mistake ever since he had pulled her out of the river and brought her home. They were sitting in the kitchen of their small cottage, eating breakfast. The sun was just barely peaking over the horizon, and the world was still dark.

Nickey furrowed his brows at Cindy's reaction to his graciousness. "Don't be like that," he said with a tinge of anger in his voice. "It's not like I tried to kill you or anything."

"Yes, but it wasn't an accident either, Nickey," she replied sharply. "You blamed me for ruining your crops and nearly did me in for it."

Nickey put down his knife and fork. "I know, I know. I'm sorry." He held up his hands in a gesture of surrender.

The two sat silently for a few moments before Nickey spoke again. "It's not like I meant to hurt you." He broke eye contact with Cindy and looked down at the table-cloth.

"What do you mean?" Cindy asked curiously after a few moments of silence passed between them. She took a sip from her tea and waited for Nickey to answer.

Nickey finally looked up at Cindy and sighed deeply before continuing. "Well... it's just that—you were so beautiful... and smart... and funny..." He trailed off into silence again, staring into space past Cindy's shoulder as if watching something that only he could see.

Cindy smiled despite herself, touched by the sincerity in Nickey's voice when he spoke about how much he loved her when they first met on that fateful day three years ago. Nickey was right; she had been beautiful back then—so beautiful that no one had ever told her so until Nickey came along. He recognized something special within her that others overlooked because they were blinded by her beauty, but then again, beauty can be blinding too, so he couldn't really hold it against them for their ignorance towards her other qualities.

Cindy shook her head slightly and smiled again as she remembered how different she was back then compared to the woman she was today; Nickey really did love her for more than just her looks—she *was* smarter now than she was back then (that was more due to life experience than any sort of real intelligence on her part), and she *was* funnier (a lot of things seem funnier when you're experiencing it first-hand instead of reading about or hearing about them second-hand). Most of all though, Nickey loved her because of who she was inside; while he might have fallen in love with what she looked like first, the rest of what made up who she was inside drew him right back in after she left him those three years ago after saving him from drowning in the river where they had met each other for the first time.

Cindy reached across the table and gently placed her hand over Nickey's. "I know you didn't mean to hurt me, Nickey," she said softly. "But you need to understand that actions have consequences. You can't just act on your anger without thinking about the potential harm it could cause."

Nickey nodded, his expression full of remorse. "You're right, Cindy. I should have thought things through before I reacted. I let my anger get the best of me, and I'm truly sorry."

Cindy squeezed his hand reassuringly. "Apology accepted, Nickey. Just promise me that you'll think twice before you let your anger control your actions again."

"I promise," Nickey replied earnestly. "I never want to see you hurt because of me."

They sat in silence for a while longer, the weight of the past hanging heavy in the air. But as the sun continued to rise, casting a warm glow over the room, the tension between them began to slowly dissipate.

Cindy moved her hand away from Nickey's, but he reached out and caught it, refusing to let go. "I love you, Cindy," he said, searching her eyes for any sign that she still felt the same.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she gazed at him. "I love you too, Nickey," she whispered, her voice filled with a mix of emotions. "But love alone isn't enough. We have to learn from our mistakes and grow together."

Nickey nodded, his grip on her hand tightening. "I promise, Cindy. I'll do whatever it takes to make things right between us."

Cindy leaned forward, resting her forehead against his. "Let's start over, Nickey," she said, her voice filled with hope. "Let's build a future together where we communicate and understand each other better."

A smile spread across Nickey's face, his eyes shining with renewed determination. "I couldn't ask for anything more," he replied. "I'm grateful for this second chance."

With that, they both stood up from the table, ready to face the challenges that lay ahead. As they embraced, the weight of their past mistakes began to lift, replaced by a newfound sense of forgiveness and a shared commitment to make their relationship work.

From that moment on, Cindy and Nickey embarked on a journey of healing, growth, and love. They sought therapy together, learning healthy ways to express their emotions and resolve conflicts. They also delved into self-reflection, each discovering their own shortcomings and working towards becoming better partners for one another.

Over time, their bond grew stronger, rooted in a deep understanding and genuine appreciation for one another. They weathered storms and celebrated triumphs together, never losing sight of the lessons they had learned from their past mistakes.

And as they sat hand in hand on the front porch of their cottage, watching the sun set in brilliant hues of orange and pink, Cindy knew in her heart that their love had not only survived the darkness but had emerged stronger and more resilient than ever before. She was grateful for the second chance they had been given and looked forward to the bright future they would build together.
