"You can't cause this human suffering. It's not humane, it's not right."
"Humane? Not right? That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. You're a fairy that thinks humans are mean to animals! What is wrong with you?" Bellamy scoffed. She sat perched on a flower petal, a full 4 feet off the ground.
Tabitha glared at Bellamy, her face as red as the red hibiscus flowers they stood amongst. "Humans aren't meant to eat anything with a face and wings," she said. The late summer day was hot and humid, but Bellamy didn't seem bothered by it. Even Tabitha's long blonde hair felt damp, sticking to her forehead in clumps.
Bellamy kicked a flower petal, sending it flying through the air and landing on Tabitha's shoulder. "They eat all kinds of things - fish, birds, worms... Why should we care if they eat bees?" Her voice had taken an uncharacteristically playful tone.
Tabitha narrowed her blue eyes at Bellamy. "Because bees are good for the environment! They pollinate flowers and crops! Humans need them!"
"So what if they eat one bee? Humans will just eat another one." Bellamy raised an eyebrow at Tabitha, who responded with a sharp glare in return before letting out an exasperated sigh. Bellamy smiled triumphantly and began swinging her legs back and forth in midair, kicking up dust from the flower bed they were standing in front of.
"Well... I still think humans shouldn't be allowed to eat anything with wings." She furrowed her brows as she thought about all the animals humans ate for food - things like cows and pigs, chickens and horses. But then again... They did have wings too... Maybe wings weren't the deciding factor after all? How was she supposed to know what made an animal an animal? If a cow was an animal because it had four legs and hooves - then what about ants? Did ants have hooves? Did ants have wings? They probaly didn't have wings... Or did they? Whatever, she would figure it out later. Right now she needed to find that baby bumblebee.
"What are you doing here anyway?" said Tabitha, shaking her head slightly as she tried to clear her thoughts of cows and ants and piglets and baby bumblebees. "I haven't seen you around these parts before." Not that she could see anything around these parts - she was surrounded by overgrown trees of various sizes that blocked out all sunlight from reaching the forest floor below them. The only reason why Tabitha knew there was even a forest floor below was because she could hear insects buzzing around in every direction - more than any other place she'd ever been to in China. She'd always wanted to explore this part of China - maybe ask some locals if there was any food or water that could help cure some of those diseases humans got from eating stuff with faces or wings... But the dense trees made exploration impossible, so instead Tabitha had gone looking for answers from Bellamy instead.
Bellamy shrugged nonchalantly as she hopped off her flower petal onto Tabitha's shoulder (an extremely difficult feat for anyone else to accomplish). "Just bored I guess." She stretched out both arms as far as possible (which gave Tabitha quite a scare) before folding them back into place on top of each other on her lap again. "So where are we going anyway?"
"I'm trying to find a baby bumblebee - I found it while I was walking through town earlier today." Tabitha cast an eye towards Bellamy who looked very confused at first until realization dawned on her face moments later when she noticed two buzzing flies hovering above their heads with obvious interest in Bellamy's honey-blonde hair as they buzzed through it (to no avail). "Can you please brush your hair today?" asked Tabitha exasperatedly as she swatted both flies away from Bellamy's head with one hand while swatting away another fly with the other hand before looking up again at Bellamy who had let out a sigh of annoyance upon having one of those pesky flies disturb her napping session on Tabitha's shoulder earlier that afternoon when they had first met up for lunch together earlier that afternoon at their favorite Chinese restaurant downtown near the lake - where there were plenty of flowers for Bellamy to feed off from during lunchtime since there weren't many trees or anything else that could obstruct their view of the lake water beyond them (which was perfect since neither fairy liked being surrounded by trees).
Bellamy raised an eyebrow, a mischievous smile forming on her lips. "Oh, a baby bumblebee? How adorable! Why on earth would you want to find a baby bumblebee?" She tilted her head to the side, her crimson hair shimmering in the dappled sunlight that managed to find its way through the thick canopy of leaves above them.
Tabitha's cheeks flushed as she looked away, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want to save it. There's a construction project planned near the town, and they're going to destroy its habitat. I thought maybe I could take it somewhere safe, somewhere it could grow and thrive."
Bellamy's playful expression softened as she pat Tabitha's shoulder with an unexpectedly gentle touch. "Well, my dear fairy friend, I think that's a noble cause. Lead the way and I'll help you find that bumblebee."
With newfound determination, Tabitha carefully stepped over tangled roots and fallen branches, her blue eyes scanning the forest floor for any sign of movement. It was a daunting task to find such a small creature amidst the lush greenery and buzzing insects, but she refused to give up.
Meanwhile, Bellamy flitted effortlessly from one flower to another, occasionally hovering by Tabitha's side to offer words of encouragement. The fairies shared idle chatter, their laughter blending harmoniously with the rustling of leaves and the tunes of hidden songbirds. In the midst of their search, an intricate dance of friendship unfolded between them, deepening their bond with each passing moment.
Hours turned into moments as the sun began to dip behind the horizon, casting an iridescent glow upon the forest. Just as hope began to wane, Tabitha's sharp eyes caught a glimmer of yellow and black amidst a cluster of wildflowers. "There it is!" she exclaimed, pointing with trembling fingers.
Bellamy's wings fluttered excitedly as she joined Tabitha, both fairies witnessing the beauty of nature's delicate balance. The baby bumblebee floated lazily from petal to petal, unaware of its impending displacement. With gentle grace, Tabitha cupped her hands around the tiny creature and held it close to her heart.
"Where should we take it?" Bellamy asked, her voice laced with anticipation and concern.
Tabitha pondered for a moment, her brow furrowing as she weighed her options. Then, a smile spread across her face, illuminating her ethereal features. "There's a meadow on the outskirts of town. It's filled with flowers and untouched by human activity. That's where it belongs."
Guided by Bellamy's magic, they whisked through the night sky, their wings shimmering and casting radiant trails of light behind them. The world below seemed to hold its breath as they soared, their mission igniting a spark of hope in even the darkest corners of the forest.
As they descended upon the meadow, the baby bumblebee buzzed with newfound energy, perhaps sensing the vast expanse of its future home. Tabitha carefully released it, watching in awe as it joined the symphony of other buzzing insects, seamlessly blending into the tapestry of nature.
A sense of accomplishment washed over Tabitha and Bellamy, their souls interwoven with the creatures they had fought so fervently to protect. But their work was not yet done. They made a vow under the moonlit sky to continue championing the rights of the voiceless, to fight against the destruction of habitats, and to educate those blind to the interconnectedness of all beings.
From that day forward, Tabitha and Bellamy became guardians of the natural world, their mission rippling outwards to touch the lives of countless creatures. With unwavering determination and boundless compassion, they would change the hearts and minds of both humans and fairies alike, ensuring that harmony would forever be restored between all living things.
