I awake to the sound of screaming, screaming that seems to be coming from my own voice. I can’t seem to register what’s happening. My brain is telling me that everything is burning down around me and I need to get out. But my limbs are frozen, unable to move and I’m not even sure how long this has been going on for.

I look up at the ceiling and see flames licking the orange paint I chose when we bought the house together. It was supposed to remind us of a sunset in Hawaii after our first trip there together. Now it’s all I can think about as my house burns down around me. I try to inhale deeply but all of my breath seems to have been knocked out of me during the initial blast. My eyes feel heavy, but I manage to force them open so that I can assess my situation.

I look down at my body and notice that only one arm is moving. The other is hidden by a piece of rubble, but it doesn’t feel like a part of me anymore. It feels numb, like it isn’t actually a living part of me anymore. My mind is trying to tell me that it’s okay because it will heal, but if it doesn’t get out soon enough then it won’t matter how much time passes because it won’t be attached anymore anyways.

My eyes dart around my room and land on an object that makes my heart flutter with hope - my engagement ring. It was on the dresser next to where I had fallen asleep watching TV last night with Maria on my lap cuddled in front of the fire place. She always liked being close to the heat source regardless of how many times I told her she would get burned doing that.

I try in vain to reach for it, but between the rocks that are pinning me down and the adrenaline coursing through my veins, I realize there’s no way for me to grab it without further injuring myself even more than I already have been. That doesn't stop me though from trying again and again until finally one of the rocks shifts and rolls off my body onto the floor next to me.

I attempt another deep breath only to realize that there isn't any air left in my lungs so now all I can do is wheeze pathetically while tears roll down my cheeks landing on top of flames as they lick at what remains of walls around me. The heat is unbearable, but I don't care because somehow in that moment all I can focus on is getting that ring out before another stone crushes whatever remains of me or worse yet sets this entire house ablaze once again after I'm gone - or worse yet still alive!

Once again, I try reaching for it desperate for something to hold onto - something solid and tangible when suddenly a tiny light glints off its surface sending tiny sparkles across the room illuminating what remains of our life together as if in a dream-like state.

A dream...a dream...I have something else....something small....something precious....something important...about grandma...granny...my granny's necklace...the one she wore every day since she was married...the one she gave back when mama died...the one she saved from burning with her body after being taken by cancer...the one that meant more than anything else in this world....she said....she said if anything ever happened...if anything ever happened make sure you give this necklace back right away before putting yourself in danger....before putting yourself in danger.....before putting yourself in danger....before putting yourself in danger.....before putting yourself in danger....before putting yourself in danger....before putting yourself in danger.....before putting yourself in danger....until you're safe....safe....safe....it's too dangerous here.....too dangerous........too dangerous...... too dangerous.........everywhere's too dangerous..........no help..........no help..........no help..........no help..........no help........

As my mind races, fragmented memories of my grandmother's words echo through my thoughts, urging me to find safety and protect myself. The necklace, a tangible connection to a past filled with love and wisdom, suddenly becomes my lifeline in this chaos. With a renewed surge of strength, I reach down to unclasp the necklace from around my neck, the weight of it comforting and reassuring in my hand.

But just as I'm about to put my plan into action, a wave of realization crashes over me. Giving the necklace away could save someone else's life, but if I leave now, I might never see Maria again. I can't abandon her. My love for her is an unbreakable bond, stronger than any disaster that has befallen us. As the flames creep closer, their menacing heat intensifying by the second, I make a split-second decision: Maria, and only Maria, is worth fighting for.

Using every ounce of strength left in my battered body, I push and claw my way through the rubble. The pain is excruciating, screaming at me every step of the way, but I refuse to let it overpower my determination. The ceiling groans menacingly above me, threatening to collapse at any moment, but I ignore its warnings. Maria is waiting for me, and together we will face whatever comes our way.

Finally, I break free from the wreckage, stumbling into the hallway. The once familiar path is unrecognizable—a labyrinth of flames and destruction. But I know the way. Through the smoke-choked air, I follow my instincts, my love for Maria serving as a beacon in the darkness. The sound of her cries, full of fear and confusion, drives me forward, pushing aside the pain that cripples my body.

The staircase, now a treacherous obstacle, stands between us. Each step creaks ominously as if protesting our escape. I move past the memories etched into the wood—the countless times we laughed, the tears we shed, the love we shared. Step by agonizing step, I climb higher, my heart pounding in rhythm with my determination.

At last, I reach the top, lungs scorched by the seething heat, and burst into the room where Maria is trapped. The flames dance triumphantly around her, threatening to consume her innocence. But I refuse to let those flames win. Gritting my teeth, I summon the last remnants of my strength and grab Maria from her hiding place.

Carrying her fragile body in my one functional arm, we race back toward the stairs. I can feel the heat singeing my back, hungry tendrils of fire reaching out to ensnare us. It's a race against time, and I'm determined not to let the flames snatch away what matters most to me.

With a final surge of adrenaline, we plunge down the stairs. The wood crackles beneath our weight as if begging to be released from its fiery torment. We stumble through the fiery obstacle course, navigating on instinct alone. The world around us spins in a whirlwind of chaos, but I keep my focus locked on Maria's safety.

At last, we burst through the front door, gasping for breath as the cool night air embraces us. We collapse onto the grass, our bodies battered and exhausted. The flames roar triumphantly behind us, celebrating their conquest, but we have emerged victorious. Maria clings to me, her tear-streaked face buried in my shoulder, and I hold her tight, grateful beyond words for our miraculous escape.

As the fire engines wail in the distance, their arrival a bittersweet symphony, I realize that while my house may be reduced to ashes and memories, the love and bond Maria and I share remain unscathed. Together, we'll rebuild not just our home but also our lives. And from the ashes of this destruction, we will rise, stronger than ever before, ready to face any turmoil that comes our way. The past may be charred and lost, but the future is ours to shape, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
