I have seen the sun. It is beautiful. An orange ball, rising slowly over the hills and valleys of the land, blood red where its light hits the ground. The first sun of a new era dawns; a new day. I will not begrudge it for being born without me in its sky.

I have shuddered in the shade of tall trees with their broad canopies, casting deep shadows on my skin, protecting me from the element that poisons me. I have stepped onto soft grass and felt it tickle my feet. The sensation of pebbles beneath my soles has been glorious.

I have bathed in lakes clean enough to drink. I've drank water that ran clear across fields and rivers, never tainted by soil or death. I've lain on grassy plains and looked up at blue skies untouched by clouds, kissed by the sun directly above, basking in its glory like an animal, as no creature should fear such a thing.

But most importantly... I have loved again, after a long time spent alone or hidden away from those who could save me if they saw me for what I am: A creature born cursed to suffer as few others understand suffering; as few others can fathom when they look upon me without revulsion. And Lucian has loved me too.

My love was once forbidden but he has shown that not all creatures are so quick to judge another based on their origins alone. That not all things are evil just because they were born differently and that there is hope for those who should be dead just because our kind sees them as nothing more than abominations to be purged from our world with blade or flame before they can pollute us further with their sins against nature and God's mandate for us to live only as we were meant to: As killers, as demons in sheep's clothing, waiting for the one moment we can satisfy our thirst for blood with another of our kind - or better yet, a human victim - and then return to the shadows to hide until we hunger again...

Lucian has always been there for me when I was threatened by other humans whose instincts had them believe we were monsters which needed to be killed without mercy or hesitation because of what we were: Vampires who deserved no second chances because our very existence is an insult to everything that makes us what we are. He saved me from mobs when they grew angry at my existence among them and burned buildings down around me while they danced in joyous abandon around my own body covered in blood and ash while they cheered each other on, shouting praises to God and cries of victory over the "demon", over "Lucifer's child", over "Satan's whore" together as if any one of them had ever seen him with their own eyes; as if any one of them could say with any certainty where he lived or how many there were like us among them... To know this truth about us yet still deny us humanity when it suited them was something he could never understand but something he was willing to fight back against when necessary... He saved me from men who wanted nothing more than to see my head separated from my body while they chanted their prayers at me while they held crosses aloft as if it would protect them from harm after fighting against fellow men who may have thought differently about our kind but couldn't help but follow along out of fear... He saved me from those who simply didn't care whether or not what I was was wrong or right; he saved me because he cared about what was happening and knew that it wasn't fair... And even after all of this he would still love me no matter how much I tried to push him away... Even after all of this he would still fight for my life when it seemed like there was no hope left for either one of us anymore... And even after all of this he would finally be able to see his daughter born into this world just before his life ended so that she might live free from hatred because her mother was different... So that she might grow into womanhood surrounded by people who would learn to accept her despite what she was even if it took years for them to understand... So that she might grow up knowing that someone loves her enough to give up everything so that she might live when there seemed no hope left at all...

It was a crisp autumn evening when Lucian and I made our way through the winding streets of the city, hand in hand. The warmth of his touch brought a sense of comfort and belonging that I had never experienced before. The weary looks from passersby did not faze me as much anymore, for I knew that I was not alone in this hostile world. Lucian was my shield, my protector, and the embodiment of love that had blossomed amidst the darkness.

As we walked, the setting sun cast long shadows over the familiar cobblestones. It was then that a stunning realization struck me. I had spent so long under the cover of night, shrouded in shadows, that I had never truly witnessed the beauty of a sunset. The hues of orange, red, and gold painted the sky, illuminating the world in a breathtaking display. Nature's canvas had unveiled itself to me, and I couldn't help but be in awe.

Lucian turned his gaze towards me, his eyes filled with a tenderness that reached the depths of my soul. "Have you ever seen anything so magnificent?" he whispered, his voice almost lost in the evening breeze.

I shook my head, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "No, Lucian. I have never seen anything so wondrous. The sun holds a beauty beyond words."

His hand tightened around mine, his love radiating through every touch. "There is so much more for you to see, my love. This world is vast, and together we can explore every corner of it."

With those words, my heart fluttered, and a sense of adventure sparked within me. Perhaps there was more to my existence than hiding in the shadows. Lucian had shown me that not all humans were filled with hatred and bigotry. There was a chance, a glimmer of hope, that we could bridge the gap between our worlds and forge a future where love triumphed over fear.

Days turned into weeks, then months. Lucian and I embarked on countless journeys, discovering the wonders of this world that had once seemed so foreign to me. We climbed mountains, gazed at starlit skies, and danced in fields of wildflowers. Each experience was a testament to the boundless joy that life could bring when shared with someone who understood and accepted me for who I was.

But as the years passed, a new realization began to haunt our idyllic existence. The world was changing, and not all of that change was for the better. The once accepting nature of humanity seemed to wane, replaced by fear and prejudice. Rumors and tales of "the supernatural" spread like wildfire, feeding the darkness in people's hearts.

One evening, as we sat by a crackling bonfire under an inky sky, Lucian's eyes searched mine, filled with a mixture of concern and determination. "We can no longer remain hidden, my love. The world needs to see that there is light within the darkness. We must stand together, not just for ourselves but for those who will come after us."

I nodded, knowing that it was time for us to rise from the shadows and face the world head-on. We would become beacons of hope, proving that love and acceptance could prevail, even in the face of hatred and ignorance. It wouldn't be easy, but we were willing to fight for the future we so desperately yearned for.

With renewed purpose, we gathered allies who shared our vision, humans and creatures alike. Together, we formed a coalition, unyielding in our resolve to bring about change. We spoke out against injustice, challenged the stereotypes that had plagued our existence for far too long, and fought for equality.

As the tides of resistance rose, we encountered adversaries who were desperate to cling to the comfort of their ignorance. They hurled insults and threats, seeking to extinguish the light that threatened to overturn their deeply ingrained beliefs.

Yet, in the face of adversity, our love only grew stronger. Our unwavering dedication to the cause inspired others to rise with us, to stand against the darkness that threatened to consume us all. We became a force to be reckoned with, a beacon of hope for those who had been cast aside by society.

And through it all, Lucian and I never faltered. Our love endured, the flame burning brighter with each passing day. We were pioneers in a world torn apart by fear, fighting for a future where acceptance reigned supreme.

As I sit here, penning the words that encapsulate our journey, I can't help but feel a surge of gratitude. Gratitude towards Lucian, who saw beyond the confines of societal norms and embraced me for who I truly was. Gratitude towards the world, for every hardship we endured deepened our resolve and strengthened our love.

As the sun sets once again, casting its warm glow on the landscape before me, I am filled with hope for the generations to come. We have ignited a flame of change, and its light will guide us towards a brighter future, where acceptance and love transcend all boundaries.
