Ash leaned back against the smooth, wooden window frame and gazed out across the small village. The sun was setting in the distance, casting a warm, orange glow on the quaint, blue-and-white cottages dotting the landscape. Children were running through the streets, laughing and chasing one another with wooden swords and shields, as adults sat on street corners and watched them play. Cows lounged in their pastures nearby, contentedly chewing grass and laying in their own pools of sun.

"You never told me you had a house here."

Serena's voice startled him from his reverie. He turned around to face her and smiled. "I didn't realize I did," he replied. "This is my first time here."

"It's beautiful," she breathed, walking up to him and staring out at the scenery with him. "I wish I could live here."

"Well, maybe someday you will be able to come visit my place in Cerulean City," he told her. "That way we can see each other more often."

She smiled and pecked him on the cheek. "Maybe." She let his arm slip down her shoulder; she turned back towards their bags lying at their feet and began rummaging through hers. "I need to use the bathroom before we head out again."

He nodded absently as she left, then turned back to watch the village life outside again. When Serena walked passed him earlier that day, he'd been so surprised he almost accidentally tripped over an apple cart in front of him; she was now wearing a dress for once! It wasn't as fancy as some of the ones he knew she owned, but it made her look pretty and seemed to suit her well enough. He thought about how much trouble they'd gone through just to get this far; how hard it had been for both of them to navigate a foreign world and learn how things worked there. He felt proud of himself for helping her adapt so quickly to all of it--the food, culture, language--even though he'd been surprised himself at how well he was getting used to this new reality too! He smiled and chuckled quietly as he remembered some of their misadventures: when they fooled that old man into letting them stay in his home with some magic tricks; when they had bought all those apples from that shopkeeper just yesterday when Serena pretended they had bought apples from him before; or even when they used their Pokemon to fight off those boys harassing Serena on the street because Ash forgot that she might not have any Pokemon yet...it seemed like only yesterday that they had first met in Pallet Town, but now here they were traveling across Europe together! What would Professor Oak say if he could see them now?

He hadn't thought about Oak much lately; it was nice having someone else take care of everything for once! If only his mother could be so lucky... He shook his head angrily as he heard Serena make her way back out from the bathroom again. He crossed his arms and looked over at her with a smile as she came closer; she looked up at him curiously but said nothing about it. With a light laugh, he reached down into his bag for something. She noticed what he was doing and smiled expectantly at him; when he pulled out a small jewelry box wrapped in red paper with gold ribbons tied around it, she immediately grew excited with excitement written across her face. She clasped her hands together over her chest and squealed happily while holding out one hand towards him expectantly--her eyes glittered like stars against the setting sunlight outside behind her as she stood there waiting for him to give her his present. It was hard for him to keep a straight face as he handed it over to her; luckily for both of them though, neither of them laughed until after she opened it up: inside was a gold necklace engraved with letters spelling out 'Serena', which had been resting beneath a small note reading 'Sorry I couldn't afford anything better' written on yellow parchment paper inside too. She giggled softly as she took out the necklace from its box--the feeling of joy nearly overwhelmed Ash as he saw tears welling up in her eyes--but before she could say anything else they heard footsteps behind them approaching hurriedly along with voices calling out loudly in what sounded like German around them! They turned around together just in time to see two men dressed like bandits charging towards them with crossbows drawn; Ash let go of Serena's hand instinctively and shoved her aside forcefully away from himself! She stumbled backwards into one of the German houses behind them while the arrows shot past where both of them had just been standing moments earlier! The men stopped short when they realized Ash wasn't alone anymore--and that Serena wasn't actually by herself but being held hostage by one of their own instead!--and immediately lowered their weapons instead. One man swore under his breath while rubbing his arm awkwardly; after handing Serena over to his comrade who took charge of watching over her while keeping an eye on Ash, the other man walked over toward Ash instead where he stood alone now looking very confused by what just happened.

They stared each other down silently for a moment--with Ash trying desperately not to look at Serena who was now sitting quietly on top of one of those blue houses looking down at them worriedly--before the German man spoke up: "Halt!" He pointed sharply towards Ash's beltline accusingly with one thick finger while making sure not to point anywhere near either crossbow tied onto his back lest he wanted one fired right back at him too! "Why are you hiding such dangerous weapons within your person?!" His voice hadn't grown louder or angrier yet; rather than acting aggressively, this German man seemed more frustrated than anything else at having found these strangers outdoors wearing such suspicious clothing found mostly among thieves and monsters everywhere else throughout Europe! Even worse for him though: he couldn't find any signs whatsoever indicating whether or not this stranger was carrying any dangerous items either hidden or otherwise stowed somewhere within or upon himself without getting too close! He certainly didn't want anything bad happening between any Germans staying around here anyway...not after everyone else left this town years ago due to all those strange disappearances which no one could explain still today either... "If you don't mind me asking," continued the man slowly after thinking about what course of action should be taken next: "What exactly is your business here?"
