The air was cool, and the sun just beginning to rise. Amit had been waiting for hours, but it seemed like it had only been minutes
before he saw her. She was approaching on foot, a bundle on her shoulder. He noticed her as soon as she'd left the village behind, first by the slow but steady swinging of the bundle, then by the sound of fast-paced footsteps echoing off the forest trees. The footsteps were accompanied by a constant moaning that Amit had learned to ignore within the first hour of his watch.
He stood up from the tree stump where he'd been perched all night long, stretching his aching legs and back. It was time. The woman, an older lady wearing what seemed like all of her clothes at once for warmth, approached him at a fast pace. She dropped the bundle at his feet, and he noticed that beneath all that extra clothing was an *empty* robe. She smiled at him nervously and backed away slowly into the woods; it was clear that she wasn't one for goodbyes.
Amit picked up the bundle and entered his own home through the back door. He placed it onto a table in his kitchen and began unwrapping it carefully; this is where things could go wrong if he wasn't careful enough. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw what was inside: one sleeping baby boy. He unwrapped it further until only the baby itself remained; still asleep in a blue onesie with a duck on its front pocket. Amit looked down into its face and brushed some hair out of its eyes gently before picking it up into his arms and taking it towards his bedroom.
The baby woke up halfway there, beginning to wail loudly as he did so. Amit turned to see what had woken it up: his own reflection in the mirror of their hallway's wall caught his eye, startling him just enough to make him drop the baby onto the floor with a thud! The baby began squalling even louder than before from its prone position on the floor; Amit looked back over at himself in disbelief, realizing what must have happened.
"Sarpek," He whispered quietly to himself as he stared at his twin in horror and shame; His double-self had begun to emerge through stress and lack of sleep, something which would never have happened if Ranijit's life hadn't taken such a drastic turn for the worse over these past few months...or years? "I'm sorry."
He rushed forward to pick up the child since Sarpek wouldn't be able to do so without hurting something or someone in their house; Ranijit had always been quite gentle when holding babies or children when they were younger together but Sarpek...well...he didn't really seem to care about much anymore after what had happened last year during those riots in Bangalore...and well before then too...and...and...and...but this wasn't the time to think about things like that!
Amit put on an extra pair of gloves that were kept just above their sink for occasions like this (their mother used them whenever she needed to handle raw chicken) and quickly dressed little Ranijit in Ranijit's old clothes from last year; this would hopefully keep Sarpek occupied for long enough so that he wouldn't get too close to Ranijit himself...or anyone else for that matter! Once this was done, Amit put him down into Ranijit's own bed while keeping an eye on Sarpek via their living room mirror; now safe from any sort of danger, at least physically anyway.
The worst part was next--making sure that Sarpek didn't get out while they were meeting with Dr Faruq later today; something that could easily happen if he wasn't careful enough! Amit went over to their closet and pulled out some soft rope which he tied around Sarpek's waist tightly enough so that he wouldn't be able to move around too much while they were gone but not so tight that it might hurt him badly if he tried anything funny during their absence. Next came some duct tape over Sarpek's mouth just in case he might try any kind of magic spells or other abilities against them or others before finally securing him with some chains around their neck as well as their wrists and ankles just in case things got *really* bad before they returned home later today! Well done! Now all that was left was packing up everything important into their car before heading out towards Dr Faruq's office in town; hopefully there would be no more incidents like this today!
As Amit approached the car with a heavy heart, he couldn't help but glance back at his house one last time. It had been their sanctuary for as long as he could remember, their refuge from the world outside. But now, it felt tainted, invaded by the darkness that lurked within Sarpek. He took a deep breath and shook off the unsettling thoughts, reminding himself that their visit to Dr. Faruq was their best chance to find a solution.
With the baby securely fastened in the backseat, Amit settled into the driver's seat and started the engine. The car roared to life, but so did Sarpek. The sound of his muffled grunts and struggles echoed in the confined space, reminding Amit of the constant battle they faced. He clenched his fists around the steering wheel, determination etched on his face. He would not let Sarpek ruin their lives any further.
The drive to Dr. Faruq's office was long and filled with an oppressive silence. Amit couldn't bring himself to turn on the radio, fearful that any external noise could agitate the sleeping baby in the back. Instead, he focused on the rhythmic hum of the car's engine, finding solace in its steady presence.
As they reached the outskirts of the town, Amit's heart rate picked up. Dr. Faruq's office was tucked away in a quiet corner, a place known for its expertise in the rare and inexplicable. It was their last hope, their beacon of light in a seemingly endless sea of darkness. Amit pulled into the parking lot and shut off the engine, the abrupt silence engulfing the car once again.
Unbuckling his seatbelt, Amit glanced back at Sarpek. His twin brother's eyes were burning with a wildness that sent shivers down Amit's spine. He knew that Sarpek would stop at nothing to escape, to wreak havoc upon the world. But Amit refused to let that happen. With a deep breath, he reached over and released Sarpek from his restraints.
Sarpek immediately lunged forward, his eyes filled with a mix of desperation and fury. Amit reacted quickly, catching his brother's flailing limbs and wrestling him to the ground. It was a battle of wills, a fight for control that had become all too familiar. The struggle was intense, both physically and emotionally, but Amit's determination remained unshakeable.
Finally, with a surge of strength, Amit managed to contain Sarpek. He pinned him down to the car seat, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Sweat trickled down his forehead as he locked eyes with his twin. There was a flicker of recognition in Sarpek's gaze, a brief glimpse of the brother Amit had known before tragedy struck. But it was fleeting, swallowed by the darkness once again.
Amit released a shaky exhale, brushing a strand of hair off his forehead. He knew their time was limited, that Sarpek's strength would only grow over time. He couldn't do this alone. Gathering his resolve, he reached for his phone and dialed the number that had become so familiar.
"Dr. Faruq? It's Amit. We need you. Sarpek...he's growing stronger. Please help us," Amit pleaded, desperation laced in his voice. Through the receiver, he heard the calm assurance in the doctor's words and felt a glimmer of hope stir within him.
"We will find a way, Amit. Bring Sarpek to my office immediately," Dr. Faruq replied, his voice steady and comforting.
Amit nodded, even though the doctor couldn't see him. With one last look at his baby brother in the rearview mirror, he started the car again, setting off on the final leg of their journey. The road ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger and doubt, but Amit knew that he couldn't give up. For the sake of his family, for the innocent life entrusted to him, he had to find a way to save them all.
As the car slipped into the flow of traffic, Amit's grip on the steering wheel tightened. The road stretched out before him, winding and treacherous, but he refused to be deterred. With steadfast determination, he embarked on a path that would test every ounce of his strength, his love, and his belief in the power of redemption. The battle against Sarpek had only just begun, and Amit was ready to fight until the very end.
