·
Published 5/12/2023A daring team of scientists and clergy, led by a brave protagonist, go on a mission to establish peace with a mysterious alien race, but their perilous journey leads to mounting tensions that could spell chaos for all of humanity.

"How long do you think it'll take?"
"Hm? Oh, I don't know, maybe a few hours, maybe days. It's hard to say." The two were walking along the winding path that led up to the summit of the mountain. The taller one had never been up this high before and was clearly feeling the altitude. His shorter companion seemed to be in his element, even though he was carrying a heavy pack as well. "Why, impatient for some of my home cooking?"
"Ha! Not really...I just have a lot on my mind." The tall one said. "It's not like we can get any cell service up here."
The other man nodded sympathetically. He knew what his friend was going through. "We'll be back in no time at all, I'm sure."
"I hope so..." The tall one said under his breath.
The trail leveled off for a moment and there was a view of the valley below them. It was hard to tell, but it looked like there were clouds building up over the mountains surrounding them. They would probably need to start making their way back down soon if they didn't want to get caught in anything bad. "Maybe we should turn back."
The shorter man shook his head. "Look at how beautiful it is out here! Why would we want to go back down and sit inside with people who are trying to kill us?" He smiled cheerfully at his companion and started clapping his hands together, as if applauding nature itself for its splendor.
The taller man sighed and gave him a weary look. "You know why." He said simply and turned away from the view so they could continue onward toward their goal.
A few minutes passed in silence as they continued forward. Eventually, they reached another point where they could see down into the valley again and noticed that some of the clouds were getting closer to them. There was still plenty of time though, and they could easily make it back down before any precipitation would start falling.
"So...how much longer?" The taller man asked again as they continued walking along the trail toward their destination. As they walked, he couldn't help but feel anxious about their situation, with the clouds looming and thoughts of danger echoing in his mind. Despite his internal conflict, he didn't voice his concerns, because he knew his friend preferred being in nature over being confined inside the alien ship, where life felt unnatural and every day carried the risk of betrayal.
Meanwhile, his friend had stopped chewing on the leaves he had picked up earlier and was now staring intently at something up ahead on their right side further down into the valley. He noticed a black smudge that resembled smoke rising from between two large columns of rock pointing upward like fingers reaching for the sky. This alarmed him and he wondered if they should investigate or alert the others, but he bit his tongue, not wanting to disturb his friend's silent deliberation.
As they continued to walk, the taller man's thoughts seemed to race in circles, never finding resolution. He considered the risks and the potential dangers they faced daily: the uncertainty of their future, the fragility of relationships, and the constant battle to protect the ones they cared about. His thoughts wandered to his family back home and all the memories they shared – times spent camping, experiencing thunderstorms at night, and quiet moments just listening to each other breathe.
However, amidst the chaos of their current reality, they pressed on, driven by the hope that things would eventually be okay, that they would find answers and safety. Even though these hopes were interwoven with moments of despair and feelings of entrapment, they still pushed forward, knowing that there was no turning back now. The journey needed to continue, for themselves and for everyone they sought to protect.
