Orbit of Shadows
·
Published 7/10/2023In a near future where diplomacy between nations hangs on a delicate thread, a brilliant yet conflicted Chinese pilot with a troubled past must uncover the truth behind the alleged US offensive weapons in low-Earth orbit which could ignite an interplanetary conflict, but as he delves deeper, he discovers a shocking conspiracy that forces him to question his own allegiances and risk everything to prevent a catastrophic showdown that could forever alter the fate of both Earth and space.

The first of the American satellites passed overhead.
"This is Falcon One." The voice came over the radio, almost drowned out by static. "Falcon Three and I have sighted the first target. We're executing our attack run now."
Ben Fong, in his bunker deep beneath Hong Kong, listened as the conversation continued between Falcon One and Ground Control. There was no need to speak - he could hear all that he needed to hear from the radio chatter. The Americans had known what he was planning all along. They'd had a plan of their own, and they were already launching satellites into orbit before his own had even left the ground.
All that effort for nothing. All those months of preparation, wasted in an instant. Ben stared out at the empty launch pad, still coated with the dust from where it had stood for so long unused. It had seemed such a risk at the time; to build something so monstrously powerful yet so vulnerable to being destroyed before it ever saw use seemed ludicrous... but it had been necessary if they were to have any chance of blocking the Americans' advanced technology from getting through to Taiwan. Now, though... now everything was ruined.
The voice on the radio was speaking again; "We've got visual on the target," said Falcon One. "Roger that: we're going in." There was a pause; then a roar as Falcon Three's engines ignited and sent him hurtling towards their enemy satellite. Ben flinched as he heard the noise echoing around his bunker; even though he knew that there was no way they could be detected, he couldn't help but think of how terrifying it would be if one of them slipped up in some way and let their presence be known to whatever other forces that America might have nearby...
The roar died away as Falcon Three's engines cut out, replaced by a heavy thump which echoed through Ben's bunker and made him shudder nervously. Falcon One spoke again: "We've made contact!" Another pause; then: "We're going in!" The roar of an engine sounded again, this time much closer and louder than before. Ben felt himself cowering against the wall of his bunker as Falcon One shot past overhead, jetting across Hong Kong Island to strike at their target once more...
Another long pause; then: "Falcon Two has arrived on-station," said Ground Control. Another pause; then: "Falcon Two is beginning his attack run." Another pause; then: "Falcon Two has executed his attack run successfully." A long silence followed, broken only by static from both ends of the radio channel; then finally Ground Control spoke again: "Falcon One reports complete success! Enemy satellite has been disabled! Repeat: Enemy satellite has been defeated! Mission accomplished! Repeat..." The voice continued repeating its message until Ben snuffed out its transmission with a tap on his keyboard.
He'd lost his chance to block off Taiwan's supply lines - for now at least - but at least he'd be able to keep them safe from an American attack for as long as these satellites remained in place. He'd figure something else out later... there was always another chance somewhere down the line...
The days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months. Ben Fong had not forgotten the American triumph that had shattered his plans. He had retreated into the depths of his bunker, his sanctuary from the outside world. Within these fortified walls, he had spent endless hours pouring over maps, satellite images, and intelligence reports. His determination burned brighter than ever.
His eyes were bloodshot from sleepless nights, his beard unkempt, and his clothes disheveled, but Ben had not lost hope. He had come to accept that his original plan had been naive, but he refused to be defeated. There had to be another way to protect Taiwan.
One evening, as the sun cast long shadows across his bunker, an idea flickered in Ben's mind. He paced his confined space, gathering fragments of inspiration and stitching them together. A desperate grin spread across his face. He knew what he had to do.
With renewed purpose, Ben emerged from his underground refuge. The blinding sunlight forced him to squint as he climbed the steps to the surface. He shielded his eyes and surveyed the abandoned launch pad that had once been a symbol of his shattered dreams. This time, he wouldn't fail.
Utilizing his vast network of connections, Ben assembled a team of brilliant engineers, physicists, and computer scientists. They hailed from various corners of the globe, united by a shared belief in Ben's vision. Slowly, they began to transform the dormant launch pad into a clandestine facility where their plan would take shape.
Months passed, and the world remained oblivious to the activity unfolding beneath the scrutiny of the Hong Kong sky. Ben's team meticulously crafted a new breed of satellite, one that defied the conventional notion of weaponry and defense. It was not a destroyer of enemies but a guardian of nations.
The design incorporated state-of-the-art cloaking technology, rendering the satellite practically invisible to radar and surveillance. Its primary function was not to eliminate threats but to intercept and relay vital information. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and advanced encryption algorithms, the satellite, named Phoenix, would become an impenetrable shield for Taiwan.
One fateful night, as Ben watched the final preparations being made, his heart swelled with both anticipation and trepidation. The weight of the world rested upon his shoulders, and he wondered if he could bear it. But he couldn't afford to falter now, not when his entire existence was entwined with this audacious plan.
At the stroke of midnight, the countdown began. The night was shrouded in darkness, mirroring the clandestine nature of their endeavor. One by one, the engines ignited, releasing plumes of fire into the moonlit sky. The rumble of power filled Ben's ears, but this time, it was accompanied by a sense of resolve.
The ground trembled beneath him as Phoenix ascended into the infinite expanse above. Ben clenched his fists, watching the satellite disappear into the inky blackness. The weight upon his shoulders lifted slightly; a glimmer of hope began to shine through the cracks of his shattered dreams.
In the days that followed, whispers of Phoenix's existence reached the ears of those who coveted Taiwan's vulnerability. Rumors circulated among intelligence agencies, and panic rippled through the corridors of power. But Ben remained undeterred.
As the first alerts from Phoenix's sensors started to pour into their headquarters, Ben gathered his team again. They huddled around the screens, analyzing the incoming data with fevered intensity. Phoenix's true power was about to be revealed.
The satellite detected advanced missile systems aimed at Taiwan, stealth fighter jets preparing for takeoff, and even coded messages hidden within diplomatic correspondences. With every threat intercepted and relayed, Phoenix proved itself to be a shield against impending doom.
The world watched in awe as Taiwan seemed to be mysteriously outmaneuvering and countering its adversaries. The once-vulnerable nation became a force to be reckoned with, its defenses impenetrable, and its people safeguarded by the ingenuity of one man's shattered dreams.
Amidst the celebrations and accolades, Ben Fong knew that his mission was far from complete. He had merely bought Taiwan some time, a respite in a turbulent world. But his determination burned brighter than ever, fueled by the knowledge that where there was hope, there was always another chance for victory. The battle for Taiwan's security had only just begun.
And so, deep within his bunker, Ben Fong retreated once more, ready to embark on the next phase of his audacious plan. As he stared at the maps and satellite images adorning the walls, he knew that he would find another way to ensure Taiwan's lasting safety. Failure was not an option when the fate of a nation hung in the balance.
