Stormy Siblings: Link and Aryll's Night Together
·
Published 3/9/2023Two emotionally connected and culturally diverse siblings, Link and Aryll, must face a stormy night together in the same bed and, in the end, discover if their unbreakable bond will be enough to survive the night – or ultimately break them apart.
The waves had been getting bigger.
Aryll looked out over the ocean from the top of the tower, watching the waves toss and turn. The wind also grew stronger, and she could feel her long blonde hair blow in every direction. She looked down on the small island of Windfall, where she lived with her father and his friend, Talon. She could see a large wave approaching Onetree Bay, which was right next to their home. She could also see her father and his friend panicking as they grabbed their belongings and ran to the nearest shelter: The Windfall schoolhouse.
The wave finally hit, and it decimated Onetree Bay. The roof was torn off, and all of the belongings were washed away into the sea. Aryll's father and Talon were lucky; they were able to make it to the schoolhouse in time and avoid any harm. However, when everyone went back to inspect their homes, it was clear that all of them would need to be rebuilt from scratch.
Aryll stood at the top of the tower for a while longer before she decided to head inside, closing the door behind her. As soon as she got inside, however, she knew something was wrong; there was water on the floor near her bed and someone was lying facedown on the floor nearby. Her eyes widened in shock as she called out to her father.
"Father! What... what happened? Why is there water here?"
Her father rushed over to her with a worried expression on his face. "Honey? Oh thank goodness you're okay." He quickly turned around to look at whatever it was that Aryll had seen moments earlier. "Oh no... oh no..." He began sobbing uncontrollably as he held Aryll close to him.
Aryll broke free from her father's grasp and walked toward what he had pointed at moments earlier: A body lying face down on the floor soaking wet in a puddle of water next to their bed. However, Aryll wasn't able to get too close because of how waterlogged it was- not only from being knocked into their bed by a wave but also from being left out in the rain for so long after that wave hit Onetree Bay. She felt herself start crying as she realized who it must have been: Her sister Linkle had died...
