Orion and the Shattered Shadows of Eldoria
·
Published 6/15/2023Seventeen year old Orion, the mysterious prophesied Luminary armed with supernatural powers, embarks on a quest with Lyra and Torin to restore light to a fantasy world shrouded in eternal darkness and riddled with mythical threats.

The darkness began to fall.
I had never seen it before, the sky become a void of stars, and then swallowed by the encroaching blackness. I always thought it was a poetic expression, but now I stood in the heart of Eldoria and saw that it was true. A darkness so deep the brightest light would seem to fade away into nothingness. The sun overhead seemed like no more than a distant ember, taunting me with how close it was to being extinguished. Everywhere I looked I saw things fading away into obscurity: people walking along the street, each step closer to being swallowed by oblivion; every building that surrounded me would soon be gone from sight; even Lyra and Torin who stood on either side of me were already starting to fade into the darkness.
"You know what you have to do," said Torin as he pulled his cloak around himself tighter, rubbing his hands together for warmth. "Find the Luminary."
"That's not going to be easy," said Lyra, looking around at the buildings surrounding us. "It will be hard enough finding our way back out of here." She turned her head toward me, her face lit up by the torch in my hand as she gestured at all the buildings around us. "And there are hundreds of buildings we can't see inside."
"We'll just have to start somewhere," I said as I pulled my own cloak tightly around me. This far north it was cold even during midsummer, but this wasn't summer anymore. We were late autumn now and winter would be here soon enough. We only had a little bit of time left before everything went dark forever. "We could split up, search different buildings."
"No!" said Torin quickly as he put one hand on my shoulder and another on Lyra's arm, stopping them from moving forward any further. "You must stay together or all is lost." He took in a deep breath and then let it out slowly as he closed his eyes for a moment, as if gathering his strength for something difficult ahead of him. His eyes opened again and he turned back to look at me. "Orion," he began slowly, "you realize what you are?"
"The Luminary," I replied automatically as I put my hand over where my chest was burning again. It was worse now than ever before and sometimes I thought it might consume me entirely with flames that would never die down. They'd scorch my body until nothing remained and all that would remain of me would be ashes carried away by a wind that no one else would feel or hear. "I know," I said softly with a sigh and shook my head slightly as if trying to clear away some kind of fog from my mind. "But what does it mean? What am *I* supposed to do?"
Torin gave me a sad smile then reached out one hand and placed it on my cheek for a moment before dropping it back down at his side once again. "You must be strong," he said simply, his face showing a mix of compassion and determination. "You must find the other two lights."
"What other two lights?" asked Lyra, her curiosity and concern evident in her voice.
Torin took a moment to gather his thoughts before explaining. "These two lights have been passed down within our race since the days of King Arthur when Eldoria was still a land filled with light. The lights are hidden deep inside the hearts of each member of our people, waiting for the moment they can be used to guide us all back home."
Lyra gasped, understanding dawning on her face. "So, we must search not for physical lights, but rather connect with those who carry the essence of these lights within them. But how do we find the right individuals?"
Torin nodded thoughtfully. "It will be a challenging task, for these lights are buried deep within their bearers. To find them, you must open your heart to those around you and establish a bond strong enough that they will allow you access to the hidden light inside."
Everyone remained silent for a moment, processing the gravity of this revelation. The fate of Eldoria rested on our shoulders, as we ventured into the unknown, seeking out the bearers of the elusive lights that could bring an end to the darkness surrounding us. The journey ahead would be challenging and uncertain, but with courage in our hearts and determination steeled in our minds, we knew we had no other choice but to face whatever lay before us. Only then could we ever hope to see Eldoria restored to its former glory – a land of light, life, and hope.
