"The world is a delicate balance between light and dark, love and hate, order and chaos. These two forces are locked in an eternal struggle for supremacy. We may not see it all around us, but it's there, in every aspect of our lives."

Jesse sat up from his bed at the sound of the old owl's voice, his head filled with fog from a restless night's sleep. He looked around the room. It was still dark outside, but he could hear his neighbors' chatter through the window as they prepared for work.

"Jesse? You're awake?" The voice of his partner startled him. "You've been sleeping for hours. Are you ok?"

He looked over to see the fox sitting on the side of the bed. "I'm fine. I just wasn't feeling well last night." Jesse rubbed his eyes and yawned, his whole body ached as if he had spent the entire night working out. But that was impossible - he hadn't left the house all week. The only thing he had done lately was go to work and sleep... but why?

"What time is it?" Jesse asked. He looked out at the garden where a few crows were perched on the fence, cawing loudly to each other as they flew down to peck at yesterday's breadcrumbs in the grass. They seemed so full of life... so alive! Couldn't they see that everything was falling apart? Everything seemed so damn perfect outside! How could their little world be in such danger when things just seemed to be getting better for everyone?

"It's about 7:30," said the fox, "but we need to leave soon if we want to catch up with William."

"William again?" Jesse groaned as he got up from his bed and walked over to where he had thrown his clothes last night after work. He pulled on some pants and a t-shirt before walking back over to the dresser where he put on some socks and shoes. He didn't really care what he wore these days anymore; nothing really mattered anymore - not since she had gone...

"Yea," said the fox casually as she jumped off of Jesse's bed and walked over to stand next to him by the dresser, "we've been trying to get a hold of him all morning." She glanced down at her watch which she held in her paw, "and afternoon now... but anyway," she said as she tucked her watch back into her pocket, "if we don't find him soon then we'll never be able to get this portal closed." She opened up her backpack which was sitting next to her feet on the floor and pulled out something that looked like a remote control car with wings before setting it down on top of Jesse's dresser where it immediately jumped onto one of Jesse's hats and began flapping its little bird winged arms like it was stretching out its muscles after being cooped up inside all day long. In fact, that is exactly what it did once it stopped moving its wings around - it hopped off of Jesse's hat before jumping onto his dresser drawer and then onto his mirror which it began examining itself in much like a shy teenager going through puberty would do while standing in front of their bedroom mirror after their first date with someone they liked last night when they finally got home late at night... only this teeny tiny birdy was flying around above Jesse's head instead of standing still on his dresser.

"Don't think I don't know what you're doing!" Jesse yelled at the annoying little creature as it danced around above him making all kinds of annoying noises with its shrill little birdy voice - one which made him want to jump right out of bed and go scrub his eardrums out with soap! But if he did that then how would he ever be able to hear anything else again? So instead he gritted his teeth together and tried not scream too loudly so that this thing would stop making any more noise than it already was making!

"That's Birdie," said the fox who couldn't help but giggle at how annoyed Jesse looked while eyeing off poor little Birdie who was no doubt just trying to get herself ready for their journey ahead - which apparently meant putting on makeup given how much time she spent checking herself out in Jesse's mirror!

"Birdie?" Jesse asked incredulously looking over at the fox with rage burning brightly behind those beautiful brown eyes that used to look back at him lovingly when they were together... but now there was nothing but guilt looking back at him whenever they made eye contact these days... which wasn't often anymore because whenever she looked into his eyes now she felt guilty about leaving him alone - even though she knew that he wanted her to go... or thought he wanted her to go... or whatever!

"Yes," replied the fox rolling her eyes at Birdie, "she has trouble remembering names sometimes because you know how birds are..." The fox leaned forward towards Birdie who had now stopped preening herself in front of Jesse's mirror and was busy listening intently with her ear turned towards them while still trying not look away from herself in order to hear what they were saying without having to turn around... like a shy teenager standing by herself waiting for someone else who is alone too approach her first while hoping desperately that they won't embarrass themselves by talking too loudly or accidentally bumping into someone else nearby while simultaneously desperately hoping that someone *cough* cute *cough* will finally come talk to them so they won't have to spend another minute alone standing there staring down at their shoes wishing desperately that someone would come talk them before they finally run away in embarrassment because they can no longer take any more rejection from others who probably weren't even interested in them anyway!
