Arrows of Abundance
·
Published 7/11/2023In a whimsical twist on financial success, the fierce and kind-hearted archer princess, Merida, embarks on a captivating odyssey of investing and self-empowerment. Can Merida's arrows hit the mark in the high-stakes world of finance, or will she discover that true wealth comes from within?

Merida sits at an old oak table, her quill resting in her left hand as she stares at a pile of parchment. The ink pot is on the table next to her, filled with thick black ink. She sighs and begins to write out the letters she had been practicing for the last few days. Her mother told her that it was important to be able to read and write, so much so that she had been spending even more time on it than she did training with her bow and arrow. As Merida finishes writing the word that she had been practicing, she looks over and sees her mother walking into the dining room, a scroll tied up with a red ribbon in her hands.
"Merida, I have some news."
"What is it mum?" Merida says as she puts down her quill and looks up at Elinor. "Is it about King Fergus? Is he alright?"
"He's going to be fine," Elinor replies looking over the letter in her hands, "But this isn't about him."
"Then what is it about?" Merida asks. Elinor walks over to her, untying the ribbon holding the scroll together as she does so. She then unrolls it on the table and smooths out any wrinkles before putting a finger down on one of the lines on the scroll.
"This is your father's seal," Elinor says looking back up at Merida, "Which means this letter is from him."
Merida stands up as she starts walking towards Elinor and looking over the scroll now laid out on the table. Her father hadn't written her a letter since he left for DunBroch three years ago. The only way they ever heard from him was when Fergus got one of his soldiers to deliver a message when he came back for visits. Merida scans over the letter as Elinor sits down across from her and leans in close, reading along with her daughter as they go through each line that is written there. When they get near the bottom of scroll, Merida reaches out with one finger and holds it down on one of the words written there, drawing Elinor's attention towards it immediately.
"Future Queen?" Merida asks raising an eyebrow at that section of text, "What does that mean?"
Elinor looks down at where Merida has put her finger down and reads that portion of text silently before sighing heavily and pressing her fingers against her temples while closing her eyes tightly shut. When she finally opens them back up again, standing up Merida quickly moves around behind herself so she can put both hands on Elinor's shoulders and give them a gentle squeeze in support.
Elinor takes a deep breath, her shoulders relaxing under Merida's touch. She turns around to face her daughter, her expression a mix of apprehension and determination.
"Merida," she begins, her voice steady but tinged with underlying emotion, "Your father's letter... he's proposing a betrothal for you."
Merida's eyes widen in surprise, her hands instinctively retracting from Elinor's shoulders. A whirlwind of thoughts floods her mind as she tries to comprehend her mother's words. The idea of marriage had always seemed so distant to her, something she had assumed would be decided in her own time, if ever.
"But I'm not ready for marriage," Merida protests, her voice laced with both confusion and defiance. "I haven't even chosen a suitor, let alone thought about ruling as a queen."
Elinor places a comforting hand on Merida's cheek, her touch gentle and full of warmth. "I know, dear," she says softly. "Your father acknowledges that as well. He wants to give you time to prepare and learn. This betrothal is not immediate, but a promise for the future."
Merida takes a moment to absorb her mother's words, the weight of the situation sinking in. She paces back and forth across the room, her mind racing with possibilities and uncertainties. The thought of being married off to a stranger, of having her destiny decided for her, is suffocating. But another part of her, a quieter part, wonders what it might be like to have a partner to share the weight of responsibility with.
Finally, Merida stops in her tracks and turns to face Elinor. Her determination resurfacing, she looks at her mother with fierce determination in her eyes.
"I refuse to be confined by tradition and expectations," Merida declares firmly. "I want the freedom to choose my own path and find love on my own terms."
Elinor smiles, pride shining in her gaze. "I knew you would say that, my wild and free-spirited daughter," she says, her voice filled with love. "Your father understands as well. He wants you to be happy above all else. That's why he's offering a compromise."
Merida raises an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "A compromise? What do you mean?"
Elinor takes a step closer to Merida, her voice filled with a mixture of hope and caution. "Your father suggests a grand contest, open to all the clans of DunBroch. The winner shall earn your hand in marriage, but only if they can prove themselves worthy both as a suitor and as a future ruler alongside you."
A spark of excitement ignites in Merida's eyes as she considers the proposal. A contest would give her a chance to defy expectations and choose her own destiny. It would allow her to test potential suitors and find a partner who sees her as an equal, someone who understands her dreams and respects her spirit.
"I accept," Merida says firmly, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I will partake in this contest and find a suitor who can match my spirit and share in my vision for our kingdom."
Elinor's smile grows wider, pride and love shimmering in her eyes. She wraps her arms around Merida in a tight embrace, holding her daughter close.
"My brave and resilient daughter," Elinor whispers, her voice filled with an unspoken promise. "We will face this challenge together, and find a path that allows you to be true to yourself."
And so, the news of the contest spreads through the kingdom of DunBroch, filling the air with a sense of anticipation and excitement. Clan leaders and warriors from all corners of the land prepare to prove their worth, to catch the eye of the future queen. Merida, with her fiery determination and unwavering spirit, stands ready to defy tradition and carve her own destiny amidst the hardships and adventures that lie ahead.
