·
Published 6/20/2023In a distant, uncharted solar system, an awkward yet brave young prince, Saad, must harness his extraordinary powers to defy the odds and protect his chosen realm from a looming tyrant. With no help to rely on, Saad embarks on a perilous mission that forces him to confront dark and gritty challenges while navigating difficult relationships in an archaic fifth century environment. Can this unlikely hero summon the courage to save his people and become the ruler he was destined to be?

The woods were dark.
I hid behind a tree and peered out into the clearing. The sounds of the creatures in the distance were muffled and surreal-- whispers, chirps, howls, and shrieks of laughter. My heart was racing as I peered out into the darkness, but I held still. I had to be brave.
"Prince Saad..." A voice whispered from behind me. "What are you doing?"
I gasped and jumped back, snapping my head around to see who had snuck up on me. But no one was there. I sighed and turned back towards the clearing. The whispers continued, but they grew softer and softer, until eventually they faded away altogether. I waited for what felt like an eternity before turning back around to face my advisor once more.
"I'm looking for the Night Realm," I admitted finally. "They're holding a party tonight across the river, but we can't get there without crossing this field."
The advisor nodded sagely from behind his long beard and pointed out into the darkness with his crooked finger. "You don't need a bridge to cross a river," he whispered softly, "You just need a boat."
I smiled brilliantly at that thought. I'd never built a boat before-- after all, what use did we have for boats? But it looked simple enough-- a raft big enough to hold two people, with a paddle lashed securely to it's side. The trick was getting it across the river without capsizing!
"We could try rowing it," I suggested eagerly, "Or perhaps we could use oars if we had them."
The old man shook his head slowly and pointed again into the darkness outside our sheltering trees. "There is no need for oars," he said solemnly, "We will watch over you."
I blinked at him in confusion before beginning to step forward into the clearing again when suddenly three enormous shadows appeared in front of us on the ground-- thin black streaks that swallowed up most of our tree's light as they moved closer until finally three gigantic bears stood in front of us proudly on their hind legs, staring down at me with eyes that glowed softly in the night's sky. They looked powerful, wise, and famished-- all at once-- but somehow still kind and gentle despite their size and ferocity.
"Catch your ride!" The old-man cackled as he threw something at me from behind his back-- something small and round that fell through my hands in a way that made some of its contents spill out onto my palms where they gleamed menacingly in the moonlight sky above us while others rolled away into the grass somewhere beneath my feet where I couldn't see them anymore no matter how hard I looked. It looked like... an eyeball? My hands were covered in blood now-- thick red blood that covered each of my fingers so thoroughly that there was no way anyone would be able to tell which finger belonged to which hand anymore! It looked disgusting! And yet somehow beautiful too! Glorious even! Like some kind of ancient offering! An offering fit for any king or queen! In fact...
Well... why not?
"Would you mind carrying me?" I asked sheepishly as I backed away from the bears towards my advisor who had begun waving a stick around above his head at one of them excitedly as though trying to herd it towards me faster than it was willing to go on its own accord.
The bear in front of me let out a low growl, its immense size towering over me. Its eyes met mine for a brief moment, and in that instant, I felt a strange connection with the creature. It seemed to understand my request, as if it could sense the desperation in my voice.
To my surprise, the bear nodded its massive head and lowered itself to the ground, its demeanor softening as it extended a paw towards me. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to expect, but the bear's expression was gentle, almost reassuring. With a leap of faith, I climbed onto its back, straddling its powerful body.
"Are you sure about this, Your Highness?" my advisor asked, his voice laced with concern.
"I have to try," I replied, my voice firm. "There's no other way."
As the bear's paw curled around my waist, securing me in place, I glanced back at my advisor, who wore a mix of astonishment and trepidation.
"Take care, Prince Saad," he said, his voice tinged with worry.
I nodded, a ball of nervous excitement swirling in the pit of my stomach. With a deep breath, I leaned forward, pressing my hands gently into the bear's thick fur. The other two bears followed suit, creating a triangle formation around us. It appeared as if they were ready to escort me through the treacherous night.
Together, the three bears set off into the darkness, their massive paws maneuvering through the thick undergrowth with ease. The moon watched over us, casting an ethereal glow upon the woods. The sounds of the night started to regain their intensity—a symphony of rustling leaves, distant hoots, and the occasional snap of a twig.
As we reached the river's edge, I noticed something peculiar. The water sparkled with an otherworldly luminescence, ethereal creatures dancing just beneath the surface. Their gentle glows painted the river in mesmerizing shades of blues and greens. It was like stepping into a realm untouched by mortal hands.
With a leap, the bears gracefully launched themselves into the water, the cool liquid enveloping us. My heart raced as we floated downstream, the current carrying us effortlessly towards the Night Realm. The journey had an otherworldly quality, like a dream come to life.
We emerged on the other side of the river, dripping wet but unscathed. The bears lowered themselves, allowing me to dismount. As I stepped onto dry land, the creatures of the Night Realm came into view. They were unlike anything I had ever seen before— ethereal beings with luminescent wings and radiant smiles.
They greeted me warmly, their presence filling me with a sense of awe and wonder. It was as if I had stumbled upon a hidden secret, a world of magic and enchantment that lay just beyond the veil of reality.
"Welcome, Prince Saad," a sprite-like creature said, her voice melodic and soothing. "We've been waiting for you."
For what purpose, I did not know. But as I gazed into the depths of the Night Realm, I felt a newfound determination. I had ventured into the unknown, defied the odds, and came face to face with a realm few had ever witnessed. I would uncover its secrets and fulfill my destiny, whatever it may be.
With my advisor by my side and the three noble bears as my silent guardians, I embarked on a journey that would challenge my courage, test my resolve, and unveil a destiny that was entwined with the very fabric of the Night Realm. And together, we would uncover the truth that lay hidden within its darkest corners, bringing enlightenment to both realms and forging a bond that would forever change the course of my kingdom.
