It was a cold night, with a frost. The air seemed to breathe slowly, and I could almost hear the trees around me rustling. I walked slowly through the woods, my boots crunching on the soft snow beneath them. The moon shone through the bare branches of the oak trees, lighting my path. I had been walking for hours now; my feet were sore and my back ached. But despite this, I did not stop. I knew what I would find at the end of my walk: a castle, with a moat guarded by water-sprites, a hill covered in thorns that made it impossible to climb, and three witches whose powers kept the doors locked tight.
I moved closer to the forest edge. In front of me was a wide field covered in snow. Only one thing stood there: A great black tower, as tall as any mountain, pierced by many windows. The lights within it glowed faintly. My heart raced as I began to run across the field towards it. As I drew closer, however, something terrible burst out of the ground before me - A great winged creature with scales like ice and eyes like rubies! It screamed into the night sky with a deafening roar so powerful that all of nature seemed to bend its knee before it! It flapped its wings once, sending gusts of wind that knocked me off my feet! It circled around once before landing on a nearby tree branch, its eyes glowing red as though they were lit by fire. Then it spoke: "Who are you?" Its voice was raspy and deep, like a man who smoked his entire life.
I pushed myself up from the ground and brushed off my coat. "I'm Tom May," I said shakily. "I've come to see the king." The dragonbird's eyes widened at this. "The king?" It asked incredulously."You're an idiot," he replied bluntly. "There is no king here - No one has ruled over these lands in years!" He laughed cruelly at this and cackled loudly in derision. "What a fool," he muttered under his breath as he flew down from his perch on the tree branch and landed lightly on my shoulder. "Well if there's no king," I said calmly as I tried to ignore the stench of his breath which smelled like rotten eggs and spoiled meat,"Then why did you attack me? You cannot be here without someone to protect." The dragonbird looked thoughtful for a moment before replying: "You're right about one thing - We're not here without someone to protect." He pointed behind me towards some dark figures approaching through the snowfield towards us. They were dressed in black armor studded with shining black gems that reflected hints of red light from the tower behind us onto their faces - Faces twisted into cruel expressions filled with hate and rage in their eyes that burned like hot coals in an inferno! The dragonbird smiled broadly when he saw them and cried "SEND THEM TO HELL!" As he shouted these words his body began to glow red and heat radiated outward from him until suddenly he grew larger and larger until finally he became so large that he nearly touched both sides of the field! He roared again with such force that it seemed like all of creation would be deafened by it! A blinding white light emanated from him where his throat would have been as he bellowed forth his mighty cry! Soon afterwords, however, just as suddenly as he had grew larger than ever before, several arrows made entirely out of ice shot forth from his mouth which cleaved through our enemies bodies like butter! Their bodies shattered into thousands upon thousands of pieces which flew away into the night sky until there was no trace of them left anywhere!
I stood in awe, my heart pounding in my chest as the last remnants of the enemy soldiers evaporated into the frigid air. The dragonbird, now back to its original size, turned its red, fiery eyes towards me. "Who...what are you?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. The dragonbird hopped off my shoulder and landed gracefully on the snowy ground, its wings folding against its scaly body. "I am Deryn," it replied, its voice no longer filled with mockery but now with a hint of admiration. "And I am a guardian of this land." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. In all the tales and legends I had heard, never did I imagine that a creature as majestic and fearsome as Deryn would be a creature of protection. "But why... why protect a kingless land?" I ventured, my curiosity overpowering my fear. Deryn's gaze softened, and it seemed as though a trace of sadness washed over its face. "Once upon a time, long ago, this was a prosperous kingdom ruled by a noble and just king. But darkness descended upon these lands, and the king... he was betrayed. The castle fell into ruin, and the people suffered. I am the last of my kind, bound by an ancient oath to protect the memory of what was lost." Its words hung heavy in the air, and I could sense the weight of centuries of sorrow in its voice. "But who are you, Tom May, and what brings you to this forsaken place?" Deryn asked, shifting its gaze towards me. I took a deep breath, collecting my thoughts before replying. "I am an adventurer, a seeker of lost truths. I’ve heard whispers of a hidden power within this land, a power that could restore what was lost and bring light back to these lands. I am here to uncover that power and free the souls trapped in this darkness." Deryn regarded me with a newfound respect in its fiery eyes. "Though the journey ahead will be treacherous, Tom May, I shall be your guide and protector. For if there is a chance to revive the realm that was, I shall not let that hope die." With those words, Deryn spread its magnificent wings and took to the sky once more. I followed close behind, my heart filled with a newfound determination. Little did I know that my encounter with the dragonbird marked the beginning of a perilous and magical journey that would test both my courage and resolve. As we soared through the sky, the castle in the distance grew closer, and the flickering lights within its walls seemed to dance in anticipation of our arrival. The secrets and mysteries that awaited me within those ancient walls were the keys to restoring a long-forgotten kingdom and fulfilling a destiny I had yet to comprehend. But with Deryn by my side, I walked towards the unknown, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead with unwavering bravery. The night was no longer cold and desolate but filled with the warmth of hope and the promise of a new beginning.
