Courage and Resilience of the Racecourse Grounds
·
Published 4/10/2023On Easter Sunday 2023, Wrexham FC's resilient forward Paul Mullen must face off against his arch-nemesis, Macaulay Langstaff, in a battle for victory in the 5th Century North African setting that will test his skills, courage, and willpower - with the whole of Wrexham's Racecourse Grounds Stadium cheering on.
It was Easter Sunday in 2023, and Paul Mullen had just scored 3 goals against his arch-nemesis, Macaulay Langstaff.
The air reeked of stale beer and cigarette smoke, the stench of which caused a number of patrons to turn green. The dim lights flickered as they struggled to stay on. It had been a long game, and Wrexham could only afford to beat Notts County if they scored 3 times. They were now up by 5-0.
“That’s it!” yelled Paul Mullen. “We won!”
“Nice!” said his teammate, Brian Pulcifer, whose eyes were bloodshot from exhaustion and lack of sleep. He lifted Paul up on his shoulders, making their way through the crowd that had gathered around them. “How many did you get tonight?”
“Three!” Paul shouted back in response. “Langstaff saved another one with his face, but my third one...it went in so nice and easy! Nothing he could have done about that one!”
“I know! I saw it! You got lucky on the first two, but your third goal was all skill! You are a god among men! Oh, wait...you already are a god among men! Yeah...that’s right! You can tell everyone what I said here today; I think you deserve to be recognized as such! You are going to go down in history as the greatest footballer who ever lived - bar none! That goal you made tonight will be remembered for as long as football is played...maybe even longer than that! What do you think about that?”
Paul shook his head slightly and smiled at Brian, feeling a bit embarrassed by all the excitement he was causing. "Don't be silly."
"No really!" shouted Brian. "I'm serious here!" He turned around to face everyone else who was surrounding them. "Everybody listen up! This man right here may very well go down in history as the greatest player who ever lived!" There was a loud rumble of cheering throughout the stadium, drowning out all other sounds. "Tell your grandkids you saw him play!"
"I don't know about that," Paul said quietly as he shrugged his shoulders; finding Brian's comments hard to believe. How could anyone live up to that kind of expectation? The pressure would be enormous; too much for anyone to handle alone. He would need help from people like Brian if he ever wanted to meet those expectations.
"Don't say that," Brian replied with a raised finger, noticing the look of concern on Paul's face. "You've got this! Trust me - I've seen you play before; this is nothing new for you!"
Paul mulled over what Brian said for a moment before nodding slowly in agreement; starting to feel better about himself again.
"Good," responded Brian with a smile as he looked down at his phone for the time. "It looks like our bus is almost here." He waved goodbye to everyone around him as he started pushing through them towards the exit door at one end of the stadium where their bus was supposed to pick them up and take them back home after their match today against Notts County.
