The Last Day of the Academy

“Come on, Eudoxus, we’re going to be late for the assembly!” I called out as I ran down the dusty road towards my friend’s house. The sun was already high in the sky and the air was thick with heat.
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Eudoxus replied as he rushed out of his front door. He struggled to catch up with me, his arms laden with scrolls and papyrus sheets.
“You really should have packed your things last night,” I said, shaking my head at him.
“I know, I know,” Eudoxus replied sheepishly. “I just had so much reading to do.”
“You always have so much reading to do,” I teased. “You’re such a bookworm.”
Eudoxus rolled his eyes but didn’t respond. We hurried along the road in silence, the only sound our sandals slapping against the dry earth.
As we approached the academy, we could hear the distant murmur of voices growing louder. The other students were already gathering in the courtyard for the final assembly of the year.
We quickened our pace and joined them just as our tutor, Master Philemon, stepped forward to address us.
“Good morning, young scholars!” he called out cheerfully. “I trust you are all eager to begin your summer break?”
A chorus of excited voices responded in the affirmative.
Master Philemon smiled and continued. “Today is a day for reflection and celebration,” he said. “It is a day to look back on all that you have learned this year and to consider how you will use that knowledge in your future endeavors.”
He paused for a moment before adding, “And it is also a day for me to announce this year’s recipient of the Academy’s highest honor: The Philosopher’s Stone.”
A hush fell over the courtyard as every eye turned towards Master Philemon. The Philosopher’s Stone was a prestigious award, given to the student who had demonstrated exceptional knowledge and understanding of philosophy throughout the year.
I glanced at Eudoxus, whose face was pale with nervous anticipation. He had spent countless hours studying and debating the works of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle in the hopes of winning this coveted prize.
“Without further ado,” Master Philemon said, breaking into my thoughts, “this year’s Philosopher’s Stone goes to…”
He let the suspense hang in the air for a moment before announcing, “Eudoxus!”
A cheer erupted from the crowd as Eudoxus stepped forward to accept his prize. I clapped him on the back and offered my congratulations as he made his way to the front of the courtyard.
Master Philemon presented him with a small golden statue of Socrates and praised him for his dedication to learning and his thoughtful contributions to class discussions.
Eudoxus beamed with pride as he accepted the award. I could see that he was struggling to find words to express his gratitude, so I called out from the crowd, “Speech! Speech!”
The other students took up the chant, their voices echoing off the stone walls of the academy.
Eudoxus blushed but nodded in agreement. He cleared his throat and began,
“Thank you all for this great honor,” he said. “I am truly humbled to be recognized in this way.”
He went on to thank Master Philemon for his guidance and support throughout the year, as well as our fellow students for their lively debates and insightful questions.
Finally, he turned to me and said, “And I would like to thank my friend Leonidas for always pushing me to be my best.”
The courtyard erupted into applause as Eudoxus finished his speech. I felt a surge of pride at his words and couldn’t help but grin at him.
After the assembly, we spent the rest of the day celebrating our accomplishments and making plans for the summer. We swam in the river, played games, and ate a feast fit for the gods.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I leaned back on my elbows and looked at Eudoxus.
“Can you believe that we’re finished with this place?” I said. “It feels like just yesterday we were starting our first year.”
Eudoxus nodded. “I know what you mean,” he replied. “It’s hard to believe that we won’t be coming back here in the fall.”
“But think of all the adventures that lie ahead!” I said, my eyes shining with excitement.
Eudoxus smiled and clapped me on the shoulder. “Yes,” he said. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
And as we watched the sun sink below the horizon, painting the sky with shades of pink and orange, I knew that no matter where life took us, Eudoxus would always be by my side.
