A Viking's Valor
·
Published 6/26/2023In the frozen realm of Scandinavia, Gloria, an introverted dreamer, pushes past her barriers to claim her spotlight in the brutal Viking Games. With each challenge conquered, a question arises: Will her newfound confidence crumble under the weight of her final test? An unlikely champion emerges in this gripping Renaissance tale of self-discovery and Viking glory.

I felt like a warrior.
A warrior in the prime of her life, at the peak of her physical strength. I was drenched with sweat and blood, my legs screaming to take a break, my head spinning from exhaustion. My fingers were scraped raw. I was covered in bruises and cuts and had been knocked down more times than I could count. But I didn’t care - I was alive, I was strong, and I was going to win.
I wanted to scream from the top of my lungs. To raise my axe above my head and let out a battle-cry that would echo across the entire realm! Instead, I swallowed hard and used all the willpower I had left to shove everything into the back of my mind. A sharp pain lanced up my side as someone kicked me, but it only drove me forward harder. The roar of the crowd grew louder as I saw more people jump onto their feet, excitedly waving their arms above their heads as they recognized victory within reach. They knew me now – they knew Gloria Vindicta - the victorious Viking Queen who had slain all challengers!
“You can do it, Gloria!” The man on stage behind me called out. “Almost there!”
Gritting my teeth against the searing agony shooting through my leg, I lunged forward blindly towards his voice. A flash of golden armor caught my eye and instinctively I swung my axe around in an arc, catching him right in the middle of his chest plate. He crumpled to the ground immediately with a sickening crunch, but this time there was no one to call out words of encouragement for me to hear anymore. The crowd fell silent as they stared up at me with wide eyes and dropped jaws - apparently not expecting me to kill their own champion by accident. Apparently not expecting me to be so good at fighting that even when blindfolded and injured I could still land a deadly blow on one man without injuring myself further in the process.
But then, what did they expect? They hadn’t seen me fight before this moment... they didn’t know what kind of warrior Gloria Vindicta really was!
They slowly started clapping again after a few moments of stunned silence as they realized what had happened: despite taking several blows from heavy weapons during her battles earlier in the day, she had still managed to kill the final challenger - their own champion! And he had been wearing armor too! It wasn’t even close to being an easy battle - clearly she deserved to be crowned the winner! Their warwoman-queen had proven herself worthy enough to hold high office among them! If she could defeat this fearsome opponent despite being injured...what else could she not do?
The thought cheered them up immensely and soon everyone present was standing on their feet cheering for me with tears of joy streaming down their faces. The announcer climbed up on stage next to me and took off my blindfold gently before helping me down off the arena floor – he too looked like he might burst into tears any minute now! His hands were shaking so hard that it took him three tries before he managed to clasp mine and raise them up triumphantly over our heads while blowing into his trumpet repeatedly until every last person raised their hands high in celebration!

I was overcome with a mix of emotions as the crowd continued to cheer and applaud me. Their adulation filled my ears, drowning out the pain and weariness that had taken hold of my body. It was a surreal moment, one that I had dreamed of but never truly believed would come to pass.
As I stood there on the stage, gazing out at the sea of faces before me, I couldn't help but feel an immense sense of gratitude towards those who had supported and believed in me. My mind flashed back to the grueling years of training, the countless battles I had fought, and the sacrifices I had made to reach this point. No longer was I just Gloria Vindicta, a lone warrior fighting for her own survival; I was now a symbol of hope and resilience to all who witnessed my triumph.
The announcer's voice boomed across the arena, breaking through my thoughts. "I present to you, the undefeated champion, Gloria Vindicta!" His words were met with another thunderous round of applause as the crowd roared their approval.
I took a step forward, basking in the glory of the moment. But just as I was about to descend from the stage, a figure emerged from the crowd and made its way towards me. It was a woman, her face etched with lines of wisdom and her eyes filled with a mixture of pride and concern.
"Mother," I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes. I had not seen her in years, ever since I left our village to pursue my dreams of becoming a warrior. And now, here she stood before me, a silent witness to my incredible victory.
She reached out and gently touched my cheek, her touch warm and comforting. "My brave daughter," she said softly, her voice choked with emotion. "I always knew you had greatness within you. But I never imagined you would become a legend."
Her words struck a chord deep within me, and I felt a surge of determination coursing through my veins. I had achieved so much, but there was still more to be done. The battles I had fought were not just for myself; they were for the freedom and empowerment of all those who had been marginalized and oppressed. I had become a beacon of hope, a symbol of strength and defiance in a world that sought to diminish the power of women.
With renewed purpose, I turned to face the crowd once again. The cheers and applause reached a crescendo as I raised my hand, signaling for silence. The arena fell into hushed anticipation, every eye fixed upon me.
"Today, we celebrate not just my victory, but the victory of every warrior who has ever been told they were too weak, too fragile to fight. We celebrate the strength that lies within each and every one of us, waiting to be unleashed," I declared, my voice carrying across the arena.
The crowd erupted into cheers once more, their enthusiasm fueling my resolve. It wasn't enough to be a champion; I had a responsibility, a duty to stand up for those who couldn't. I would use my newfound platform to bring about change, to inspire others to believe in themselves and rise above the limitations society imposed upon them.
As the festivities continued, I made a silent vow to myself that this would not be the end of my journey. No, this was only the beginning. The Viking Queen would take her rightful place, not just in the annals of history, but in the hearts and minds of all who dared to dream.
And with that, I plunged headfirst into the next chapter of my extraordinary tale, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. For I was Gloria Vindicta, the indomitable warrior queen, and I would forge a legacy that would endure for generations to come.
