"The most beautiful thing in this world is not love or friendship, but freedom."

-Friedrich Nietzsche

Jenny and I had been together for five years. It was a Friday evening when we moved into our new home on the beach. I had just landed my dream job as a marine biologist studying seals in Antarctica. We thought it would be nice to have a place of our own while I was gone. There's no one here on the island except us so we don't need to worry about renting it out. We had just finished unpacking our last box when we heard a knock at the door. Jenny went to answer it.

"Hello? Can I help you?" She called out.

I walked over and saw two people standing there: A tall blonde woman and a short, bald man wearing matching Hawaiian shirts. They both looked to be around 30 years old but were acting like teenagers. The woman was leaning against the man, holding his arm as she giggled uncontrollably.

"Oh my god! You can't imagine how long we've been looking for this place." The man said awkwardly, trying to find the right words to explain their appearance. "You see, my name is Bob and this is Elsa." He pointed to her before looking back at us with an apologetic smile. "We're uh...normally not dressed like this." He gestured down at his shirt then down at her bare feet before continuing, "Elsa wears high heels...And pants..." He added quickly before returning his gaze to us, blushing slightly at his mistake. "But anyway, where were we?"

"Your names are Bob and Elsa." Jenny replied bluntly as she folded her arms across her chest and stared them down with a questioning look in her eyes. Her voice sounded irritated now that she had realized who they were.

Bob smiled nervously before saying "No, the thing is...We're swingers." My face must have turned beet red because he quickly corrected himself by adding "Or rather, we swing *with* each other..."

Elsa snickered softly then bobbed her head up and down knowingly as if to say 'I told you so'. She leaned forward and whispered something in his ear which caused him to blush even more than before before returning to his previous position with his hands thrust into his pockets sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck with them. Meanwhile, I could see Jenny's face slowly change from annoyed to embarrassed as I waited impatiently for someone else to break the silence that had fallen between us. After what felt like an eternity Bob finally turned around with a nervous laugh and asked "So do you guys mind if we stay here tonight?"

Jenny looked at me then back at them before responding reluctantly with a sigh "Yea sure, whatever." She stepped aside as they walked inside towards the kitchen, pausing next to me as she whispered under her breath "Don't fuck them." As soon as they were out of earshot she turned towards me and said much louder "You know who those two are? Those are the same two people who betrayed Tom!" The anger in her voice was unmistakable but I didn't understand why she was getting so upset until she continued explaining that she had accidentally texted all of our friends about it while drunk one night after they left the bar without ever noticing their absence due to the fact that they didn't even bother ordering drinks that night or pay for them since they knew us so well. This made it very difficult for any of us to approach him about it afterwards since we couldn't seem like jealous exes accusing him of infidelity if we did end up running into him somewhere else since he would probably think we were just being paranoid or misinformed otherwise.

Even though I agreed with what she said about them having no business being here after hearing everything from Tom's friends afterwards, I decided not to mention that fact since I didn't want those two ruining what little time we have left together. Moving into this house alone together for the first time in our relationship and being away from all of our friends on an island hours from civilization felt precious. We wanted to keep it undisturbed by any external conflicts or unnecessary resentment.

As Jenny stormed upstairs into our bedroom for some privacy, leaving me alone downstairs, I couldn't help but think about happier times and how our lives had become intertwined with various people, including Bob and Elsa. The complexities of relationships and emotions had created a tapestry that was sometimes difficult to navigate, but I knew deep down we needed to find our own way of dealing with and cherishing what we had. As the sun set outside, casting its warm glow across the beach, I wondered how each of us would ultimately find the freedom that Nietzsche once spoke of, and whether it could be found alongside the bonds we formed with others.
