Victar's Doomsday Investigations
·
Published 2/13/2023Racing against an unknown enemy, a young Norwegian tech genius named Victar must use his intelligence and cunning to prevent the ultimate form of death - a total consciousness wipe - while also unlocking the mysteries of deep, dark and eerie Scandinavian ruins.
The journey to the underground began as a dream. The first time I saw it, I was a child. I still remember the thrill of fear that gripped me as we ventured into the deep fjords of Hordaland in search of troll statues and hidden valuables. We had never ventured too far from my parents' house in the small town of Odda before, but the lure of treasure was stronger than ever. My mother had organized an expedition to find something she could sell to pay for my father's overdue medical bills. The fervor with which she spoke about the treasures she was certain lay in wait for us drew me along like a puppet on strings. When she mentioned the old tales of trolls and dragons, I was hooked. My father had recently died, and I needed something to take my mind off things. So we headed out into uncharted territory, armed with only a basic searchlight and some ropes.
We were silent as we made our way through the forest that lead down to the lake where her father used to take her fishing as a girl. As we reached the entrance to the cave, both of us stopped and exchanged nervous glances.
"Are you ready?" My mother asked breathlessly.
"As ready as I'll ever be." I answered, drawing myself up to my full height, even though my mother stood head and shoulders above me in her hiking boots. She took one last look at me with eyes filled with apprehension, then started ahead into the darkness beyond.
It was warm inside the cave, almost too hot for comfort with all our winter clothes on, but neither of us dared remove our coats or hats. We cast shadows in front of us as we crept forward into the pitch blackness beyond our feeble light. After what seemed like hours, we finally came upon a fork in the path where two tunnels met at right angles before continuing on into darkness on either side. My mother hesitated briefly before pointing down one tunnel and taking an apprehensive step forward. I followed close behind her until suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks so abruptly that she nearly sent me sprawling on top of her when I bumped into her backside.
As I regained my balance and steadied myself against her broad backside, I looked up to see what had caused my parents sudden stop and discovered that we were not alone in this cavernous darkness after all. A malevolent pair of yellow eyes stared back at me from across the intersection between tunnels like twin fires burning in a pit of tar where both tunnels met together at their apexes just beyond where we stood frozen in place by terror and confusion. Of course now that I think back on it, those weren't really eyes at all-the light reflected off something metallic reflecting our light source directly up at us-but there was something so unnatural about them that they seemed alive somehow anyway, like they were actually staring back at me with malice and hate rather than just an impersonal reflection like they were supposed to be doing instead.
I turned to look back at my mother who was standing stock still next to me like a statue carved from ice and whispered "What is it? What do you see?" She did not answer right away; instead she slowly raised her arm towards whatever harbinger of doom stood waiting for us beyond that intersection between tunnels and drew a long finger across her throat in a subtle gesture meant to warn me not to make any noise that could give away our position or alert it to our presence if it happened to be more than just some kind of optical illusion playing tricks on our deluded minds but instead was actually something real and dangerous looking for easy prey such as ourselves who had foolishly wandered into its lair uninvited without waiting for backup or anything else for that matter other than an empty searchlight and some rope tied together haphazardly enough that if it fell apart mid-hike it would be nothing more than a tangled mess that might hold your attention long enough for whatever beast lived here hidden away in these shadows just beyond this point between two paths leading deeper underground presumably somewhere towards its lair where it spent its days slumbering beneath rocks while eating humans or whatever else happened by unlucky enough or stupid enough to venture too far from home without making sure there was somebody keeping watch nearby looking out for such potentially dangerous situations because often times there is no such thing as being too cautious when it comes to protecting yourself especially when you are trying something new like exploring an unknown cavern system hidden deep within the recesses of Norway's coldest regions searching for ancient treasures reputedly left behind by forgotten civilizations long since gone extinct trying desperately to escape some sort of impending apocalypse which would have been intriguing except for one small detail which is that none of those rumors are actually true because if you ask anyone who has ever worked up there they will tell you straight up flat out no such thing exists not even after all these years so what exactly is this thing staring us down from across the void?
My mother continued staring down whatever threat lurked before us until finally taking a tentative step forward towards whatever lay beyond that intersection between tunnels blocking out everything around us by sheer force of will alone until reaching a point halfway across where she stopped again suddenly uncertainty creeping over every inch of visible skin despite herself causing one hand holding onto one end of our rope to shake gently while starting with another hand holding an end connected to me directly behind her trying desperately not to stare directly at whatever loomed forever beyond those twin yellow lights shining brightly up at us like countless pairs glowing eyes staring down hungrily mocking our pathetic attempts at courage wondering why anybody would even attempt this kind of thing unless they were suicidal or crazy or maybe just plain stupid thinking they could walk right up without any weapons or anything else other than pure grit determination wearing nothing more than some regular clothes stinking from fear sweat preparing themselves for what? Death? Surely not! They couldn't possibly be serious! How could anybody be so stupid! It didn't seem possible! Not even after seeing those eyes shining brightly up at them from across a fact between two different tunnels blocking out everything else around them by sheer force alone standing there watching them mutely motionless blinking steadily refusing even attempting move closer towards them knowing full well what might happen should they try could happen would happen inevitably as surely as night follows day because nothing can stop fate itself once it's set its course set its course set its course set its course...
Victar groaned softly as he opened his eyes wide stretching his neck muscles feeling chafed raw from sleeping crooked against his hard wooden desk chair covered in drool after having fallen asleep reading yet another book about history repeating itself endlessly learning more about how little he actually knew about anything important other than life revolving around him chasing after death chasing after him chasing after nothingness finding himself staring blankly at broken wires wondering if he could put them back together hoping he didn't have time because if he did then he must be dead already which meant he must have already tried dying once already once already once already once already...
