Behind Steel Bars: Tales of Resilience in the Shadow of Darkness
·
Published 6/22/2023In a twisted realm of incarceration, Cody, a menacing Prison Guard and self-proclaimed weightlifting champion, cruelly torments his prisoners with sock gags and suffocating methods, but when a tenacious inmate uncovers a shocking secret, he pits his unbreakable will against the devious Cody to expose the haunting truth hidden within the prison walls, risking both their lives for justice and freedom.
Cody was a large man, he had been in the prison for as long as I could remember. He was like a living god to me, and I would hold my breath whenever he walked past. Cody was the head guard, and I was his new helper.
We were tasked with giving out meals to the inmates three times a day. I had never served food before, so when my boss told me that I would be serving on my first day, I was nervous as hell.
Cody picked me up at 5:30 am and drove me to the prison. The car ride was silent and awkward, but it didn't matter since there wasn't any radio playing. As we parked outside the jail, I started to get a little nauseous at the stench of feet that permeated through the car's interior. My stomach turned over and over again as we walked into building where the prisoners were kept.
The monotony of the long hallway only made me more nauseous; as if this job couldn't get worse. Finally, after what felt like hours of walking down one particular hallway, we reached our destination and opened the door with a loud creak. The people inside immediately started clapping and whistling at our entrance; they must have already been waiting for us to arrive.
"Fucking assholes" Cody mumbled under his breath.
I squeaked in surprise at his coarse language: "Sir?"
He looked back at me with an irritated expression on his face: "What?"
"You just said a bad word."
He laughed loudly: "If you can't handle my swearing then you should have stayed home." He explained in a sarcastic tone.
I looked away from him quickly; I didn't want him to see my cheeks turn red from embarrassment. It wasn't long until he ordered me to start handing out food trays to all of them; he wanted me to start with their leader first: Richard Holland, who sat in the middle of the row of benches facing us. Cody told Richard to keep an eye on me while I served everyone else their food trays too, not knowing that it was Richard's favourite pastime: watching people suffer while he ate his own meal slowly and silently. When everyone had a tray in their hand, Cody ordered them to sit down quietly so that we could eat our own meals too. They did as they were told and sat down noiselessly on the benches while we ate ours slowly standing up against the wall beside them; when we were finished eating we dumped our trays into a trash bin next to us and sat down onto two chairs that were placed next to each other behind their row of benches facing them all . Cody lit up a cigarette and took a puff from it before putting it into his mouth and looking straight into Richard's eyes with an intimidating glare on his face: "Richard; do you have anything you want to say before we start?"
Richard smirked, his eyes flickering with mischief. He seemed unfazed by Cody's attempt at intimidation. "You mean aside from the fact that your food is shit and your prison is a joke?" he retorted, his voice laced with arrogance.
Cody's grip tightened around his cigarette, but he maintained his composure. "You've got a whole lot of mouth for someone locked up in here," he shot back, exhaling smoke through his nose. "But your time will come, Holland. You won't be smirking for long."
As the tension between the two men simmered, I felt my heart race. I had never witnessed such a confrontation before, and I feared that things would quickly spiral out of control. But to my surprise, Richard chuckled, breaking the heavy atmosphere.
"You got spirit, I'll give you that," he admitted, leaning back casually against the bench. "But we both know you're just like the rest of 'em. A cog in the system. Doing the dirty work of those who call the shots."
Cody's face hardened, his eyes narrowing. "Don't pretend you know me, Holland. You don't know a damn thing."
Richard shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Maybe not. But I know enough. And I know you, Cody. You may think you're the god of this place, but in the grand scheme of things, you're nothing but a pawn."
I watched in awe as the power dynamics shifted before my eyes. Richard had struck a nerve, and I could see the internal struggle playing out on Cody's face. He was a man torn between his duty and a desire to prove himself.
Without a word, Cody crushed his cigarette under his boot and stood up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. "You'll regret those words, Holland," he growled, his voice heavy with determination. "Mark my words, I'll show you just how much of a pawn I am."
With that, he turned on his heel and strode out of the room, the door slamming shut behind him. The silence that followed was suffocating, leaving Richard and I alone in a room filled with resentful inmates.
Richard let out a low chuckle, his eyes lingering on the closed door. "Well, it seems we've stirred up quite the storm, haven't we?" he said, his voice filled with a mix of amusement and anticipation. "The game is afoot."
A sense of unease settled over me as I realized the consequences of the clash I had just witnessed. The delicate balance that had been maintained within the prison was threatened. And as Richard smirked from his seat, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of chaos would unfold in the wake of Cody's determination.
Little did I know that the clash between the head guard and the inmate leader was merely the first ripple in an ocean of turmoil that would consume us all. The lines were drawn, the pieces were in motion, and the game between the pawns and the kings was about to begin in earnest.
