"Whoa! That was amazing!" Jack threw his arms out and spun around, taking in the view of the mountains bathed in the orange light of the setting sun. He laughed, feeling like a little kid again. He'd always loved the outdoors, and he couldn't believe he'd never been up here before.

"Yeah, it's pretty neat," said his best friend Matthew, also giddy from their climb. "I'm sure you'll love it even more when you actually get to see it from this viewpoint." Matthew pointed down at the tent in the clearing below.

Jack turned around and looked at him. "I am seeing it from this viewpoint." He paused for dramatic effect. "And it's not that great." Jack started down the path again, towards his car parked in the small camping lot they had passed on their way up to this spot by the lake.

"No! You don't understand! This is gonna be so dope!" Matthew caught up with him as they walked through the grasses that bordered the trail.

Jack rolled his eyes. "Okay, dude. I'll bite. What are we doing?" The two continued to walk back towards the parking lot, weaving through other cars parked next to theirs: a beat-up old Toyota Camry that belonged to Jack, and an older model Jeep Wrangler that belonged to Matthew.

Matthew opened the door to his car and lifted up a rug that covered what looked like a few large pieces of wood sitting in there on end; he placed them upright on some rocks that served as supports on one side of where they would be setting up camp for the night. When he finished, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small chain with a pendant dangling from it; he held it out so Jack could take a look at it. It was silver and oblong, with strange markings etched into it - runes or something like that - but what really drew Jack's attention were the bright red gemstones covering most of it; they looked like rubies or garnets or something like that - he wasn't very good at those kinds of things - but they glittered like crazy under the late afternoon sun.

"What is that thing?" asked Jack, handing it back over to Matthew after looking at it for a few seconds.

"A gift," replied Matthew simply as he put it back into his pocket with a slight shrug of his shoulders. "A really neat gift." He smiled and walked over to one end of what was now obviously some kind of altar or shrine; he picked up one end of one of the pieces of wood and leaned it against a rock surface at one corner of where they would be setting up camp for the night, then repeated this process with all four corners (they formed a square about six feet across) until all four were standing upright on rocks in all four corners of an otherwise flat surface made mostly out of dirt and grasses pushed aside by their work. After making sure everything was squared away, Matthew grabbed the sides of two pieces on opposite ends of their makeshift table and lifted them off their supports (the other two pieces stayed in place), revealing underneath what looked like a folded blanket laying on top of a few smaller pieces of wood laying flat on top of each other, forming kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really an inverted V shape; he carefully unfolded this blanket out onto their table until it stretched across its full length - about six feet long - then lifted each piece around its edge and laid them gently onto either side; each piece formed kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really an inverted U shape when laid along each long edge (a pair lay parallel to each other) while still leaving most of its middle open (the blanket now formed somewhat more than an inverted V shape). When finished with this part too, Matthew stood back up straight and admired his handiwork: what had previously been just four sticks stuck into some dirt now looked like some kind of ceremonial altar covered by an upside down blanket made out of smaller inverted U shaped pieces laying along both sides (two layers now sat perpendicular to each other).

Jack had watched him do all this without saying anything; instead he simply waited for Matthew's explanation for this thing that now stood right in front of him where no such thing had been just five minutes ago: "So...?" asked Jack expectantly as he looked at Matthew standing next to him again, waiting for him to finish whatever explanation he seemed intent upon providing for whatever purpose this thing apparently fulfilled.

Matthew grinned, unable to contain his excitement any longer. "This," he began, gesturing to the makeshift altar before them, "is a portal, my friend. A portal to another realm."

Jack raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. "Another realm? You've lost me, man."

Matthew leaned closer, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Remember that pendant I showed you earlier? Well, that's the key to opening this portal. It's not just any pendant, Jack. It's a mystical artifact that has been passed down through generations in my family."

Jack's skepticism wavered for a moment as he considered the possibilities. "I thought your family just went camping and barbecued like normal people."

Matthew chuckled. "We do, but in secret, there's a whole world of magic we've guarded for centuries. This portal is our way of accessing that world, and tonight, we're going to witness something incredible."

Despite his doubts, Jack couldn't help but be intrigued. He sighed and shook his head. "Alright, let's say I believe you. What exactly are we going to witness through this portal?"

Matthew's eyes gleamed with a mixture of excitement and mystery. "We're going to witness a celestial convergence, Jack. It only happens once every century. The stars align in such a way that they open a doorway to a realm of unimaginable beauty and magic. Trust me, you won't want to miss it."

Jack couldn't help but feel a sense of curiosity and wonder building within him. He glanced at the altar, now seeing it in a new light. "What do we need to do?"

Matthew grinned. "First, we need to prepare the altar. Help me gather some wood and leaves from the surroundings."

Curiosity piqued, Jack eagerly joined his friend, gathering fallen branches and leaves. Together, they created a small fire pit at the center of the altar, carefully arranging the wood and leaves in a circular pattern.

"Next," Matthew said, "we need to light the fire and perform an ancient ritual passed down in our family."

With a flick of a lighter, Matthew set the wood ablaze. The flames danced and crackled, casting an ethereal glow on their faces. The friends stood on opposite sides of the fire, Matthew holding the pendant in one hand and Jack watching intently.

Matthew began chanting in a language Jack couldn't understand, his voice resonating with power and ancient knowledge. As he chanted, he raised the pendant high above his head, its gemstones sparkling like stars.

Suddenly, the flames surged, their spectral light shooting up into the sky like a beacon. Jack's breath caught, and a shiver ran down his spine.

As Matthew continued the chant, the air around them seemed to shift. Jack's surroundings blurred, and everything took on an otherworldly quality. The sounds of nature dulled, and an eerie calm settled over the clearing.

Then, just as quickly as it had begun, the chanting ceased, and Matthew lowered the pendant. The flames simmered down, returning to their gentle flickering.

Jack blinked, trying to make sense of what had just happened. "Did... Did it work?"

Matthew grinned, his eyes shining with triumph. "Look."

Jack turned his gaze toward the sky and gasped. The stars had multiplied, becoming an extraordinary tapestry of colors and shapes. They swirled and danced in patterns he could never have imagined. It was as if they had transcended the heavens and woven themselves into a breathtaking masterpiece.

Speechless, Jack stepped forward, drawn to the portal's mesmerizing display. He reached out a hand, feeling a tingling sensation as if the stars themselves were reaching back.

Matthew watched his friend, a mix of pride and awe in his eyes. "Welcome to the realm beyond," he whispered.

As Jack stepped closer, he hesitated for a moment. The unknown lay before him, but so did an adventure like no other. With a determined smile, he stepped through the portal, ready to face whatever wonders and challenges awaited him on the other side.
