Bound by Stars: A Journey of Interconnectedness and Growth
·
Published 6/26/2023In a deeply connected universe, the jargon-filled, best-selling tale of Lili, a fearless and audacious young woman, intertwines with Teodoro, a mysteriously devout and pale-skinned Earthling. As their bond grows, Lili's extraordinary culinary skills lead Teodoro down a path of unexpected servitude, forcing her to confront her past and discover her true place in the interplanetary web of life. Will their unconventional pairing defy societal norms and reconfigure the meaning of existence?

The alarm clock rang for what seemed like the millionth time. I looked over to the side of the bed and found my roommate still sleeping, which was odd because I could barely sleep with the constant ringing. I waited a few moments before tapping him on the shoulder. "Teo, wake up."
"Hey Lili." he replied softly, "looks like you can't sleep, huh?"
"No, this is the millionth time I've woken up to that annoying sound. Why are you still asleep? It's almost noon!" I said angrily.
"I don't know, guess I slept in late. Sorry." he said groggily as he sat up from his pillow and stretched his arms out wide and yawned loudly. He looked at me and gave a little smile and shrugged his shoulders. I stared at him for a moment and then turned away to look at the wall behind him. There was nothing interesting about the wall except for Teo's ridiculous posters of old Earth musicians like Elvis and Michael Jackson. He had a few others but they were all musicians that inspired him musically, or so he said. The only one that mattered to me was Bob Dylan because I loved his music too; but even then it was a different kind of love than Teo's.
"What are your plans for today?" he asked after standing up out of bed. His hair was disheveled, sticking out in every direction as if it were on fire.
"Well...I thought we could go see something together today! What do you want to do? A trip somewhere?"
"Oh...well...I'm not sure..." I said reluctantly as I avoided making eye contact with him. That wasn't true though; there wasn't anything that I wanted to do with Teo because he never understood what things were like back home on my planet. But that didn't mean that I couldn't just spend time with him alone when no one else is around; maybe stay in our room for a while and talk about random things or something else...but that probably wouldn't sound very appealing to him since we'd be cooped up in our tiny room alone since the others would already be doing something else elsewhere on our ship together. "Maybe it could be just us two today, if that's alright with you." I continued without thinking of other options in case my first idea went badly. "We could just talk or watch some movies if you'd like."
"Sure! We can do whatever you want!" Teo exclaimed happily before running off into the bathroom adjacent to our room and turning on the shower water within seconds of entering by slamming the door shut behind himself. "See ya in a bit!" he yelled from inside before closing the door again leaving me alone in our room again as usual; more so than usual since usually someone is here chatting with me until after breakfast which was usually lunchtime on Earth back home where we came from just a few weeks ago when we arrived here on board this ship headed to some remote region of space called Andromeda or something like that.
My thoughts wandered to how different everything was here compared to back home where everything was familiar to me and everyone spoke a language that I understood perfectly well. Though I struggled with understanding some of the people at first, it soon became second nature hearing everyone speaking my own language here on board this ship.
Anyway, I found myself daydreaming again while staring blankly ahead towards where Teo had disappeared through before realizing that he was showering now. He managed to finish showering fairly quickly, whereas mine took an hour every morning due to the low water pressure on the ship. While lost in thought, I reminisced about the differences between life on the ship and back home on Earth, such as the varying ways people dealt with heating their homes.
I quickly snapped out of my daydreaming as Teo walked out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel, his face the only thing visible. He approached me and handed me another towel, saying "Here, take this!" before dashing off towards his closet next door so he could pick out an outfit for us both to wear later on today. Together, we would embark on an adventure just the two of us, outside our room, and hopefully enjoy each other's company the entire day.
Teo emerged from his closet with an excited expression on his face, holding two sets of clothes in his hands. "How about we dress up as something? Like, I don't know, pirates or astronauts? It'll be fun!" he suggested, bouncing on his feet.
I couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm. Teo had always been the adventurous type, ready to dive headfirst into anything. And while I may not have shared the same zest for life, there was something infectious about his spirit that drew me in.
"Sure, that sounds like a great idea!" I replied, my voice filled with genuine excitement. "Let's go with astronauts. It seems fitting for our journey through space, don't you think?"
Teo's grin widened, and he nodded eagerly. "Absolutely! We're explorers of the unknown, after all. I'll even find some space-themed movies for us to watch later."
As we changed into our astronaut outfits, I couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with Teo. Despite our differences, we were both on this ship, venturing into the vast expanse of space. Maybe spending this day together wouldn't be so bad after all.
Once we were dressed as astronauts, complete with helmets and backpacks, Teo grabbed his tablet and started browsing for movies. "How about we start with '2001: A Space Odyssey'? It's a classic!" he suggested, his eyes glowing with anticipation.
I nodded in agreement, though I had never seen the film before. Maybe watching it with Teo would make it a more enjoyable experience. With Teo leading the way, we settled down on the couch in our shared living space, surrounded by the endless darkness of space outside the large viewing window.
As the movie played, I found myself getting lost in the mesmerizing visuals and mysterious plot. The silence between Teo and me was comfortable, as if we had known each other our entire lives. Slowly, I allowed myself to open up, sharing snippets of my life back on Earth and the things I missed the most.
Teo listened intently, his eyes never leaving the screen. And when the movie ended, he turned to me with a wistful smile. "That was incredible, Lili. Thank you for spending this day with me."
I returned his smile, grateful for this newfound connection. "No, thank you, Teo. I never realized how much I needed this."
The rest of the day unfolded in a blur of laughter, conversation, and shared experiences. We explored different parts of the ship, imagining ourselves as intrepid astronauts discovering new worlds. Teo shared his love for music and played his guitar while I watched, captivated by his talent.
As the sun began to set, casting hues of orange and purple across the ship, Teo suggested going to the observation deck on the top floor. It was a secluded spot, with panoramic views of the stars and galaxies surrounding us.
We climbed up the stairs, hand in hand, until we reached the deck. The sight before us was breathtaking. Countless stars twinkled in the velvety darkness, painting a picture of wonder and infinite possibilities.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Teo whispered, his voice filled with awe.
I nodded, unable to find the right words to express the overwhelming emotions welling up inside me. In this moment, I felt connected to Teo in a way I hadn't anticipated. Our differences no longer seemed important; what mattered was the bond we had formed, painstakingly built throughout the day.
As we stood there, bathed in the ethereal light of the stars, I realized that sometimes, the most unexpected connections were the ones that touched our hearts the deepest. And as Teo pulled me closer, wrapping his arm around my waist, I knew that this adventure was just the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Together, we would navigate the uncharted territories of space, hand in hand, creating our own constellations of memories along the way.
