·
Published 6/28/2023In a futuristic, judgmental Martian society, Noma and Alexander, two courageous husbands, defy societal norms as they embark on a forbidden love affair. As the boundaries between love and rebellion blur, will these fast-paced rebels risk everything to defy a world hell-bent on tearing them apart?

The kitchen, a decade before.
The harsh fluorescent light flickered and buzzed. Noma rested her head on the counter and her thoughts returned to the past, to their first kiss, a long ago forbidden kiss. Her eyes closed and she could almost feel his lips against hers again. She glanced up as he walked towards her, Alexander was a man of few words, but his expression spoke volumes. They stared at each other for a minute in silence, and then Alexander finally broke it: "I love you."
Noma's face flushed red as she looked down at the floor. "I love you too."
She looked up at him again and took a step forward into the small kitchenette. She tried to maintain eye contact with him, but felt an intense heat spread throughout her body. She had always loved Alexander's blue eyes, but now they seemed to glow with an intensity that was almost alien. Her eyes moved down from his face and rested on his mouth for a moment before focusing back on his blue eyes again. After a few seconds of this Noma couldn't take it anymore. She lunged forward and wrapped her arms around Alexander's neck as she pressed her lips against his own. His arms wrapped around her waist as they stood there together in their embrace, his lips returned her passionate kiss. Noma felt like she was on fire with desire, she never wanted this kiss to end. The two continued kissing for what seemed like minutes until Alexander finally broke off the kiss and leaned his head against Noma's shoulder.
"We can't do this," he said softly in between breaths. Noma sighed deeply as she placed her head on top of Alexander's own head so that their foreheads rested together.
"I know," she replied after taking another deep breath herself, "but I don't want this to be our last kiss." Tears began to well up in her eyes as she thought about their future together when they would have to hide their affections from the rest of Mars colony forever more if they didn't find some way to stay together after the marriage ceremony tomorrow evening.
The kitchen, ten years later.
A loud buzzing sound emanated from somewhere above them in the kitchen as Noma stood alone in front of the sink washing dishes from dinner that evening. She glanced over at the screen mounted on the wall adjacent to where she stood and saw it flash red twice followed by a green light three times: 1-2-3-4-3-2-1.....
She took a deep breath and then exhaled slowly as she tried to calm herself down, not easy when you've got thirty minutes left until your husband arrives home from work while your children are asleep upstairs in bed waiting for their father to tuck them in tonight as always - only tonight he'll be doing it alone because he won't know that you're no longer here tomorrow morning when he awakes with them at breakfast time or whenever he decides to wake up today or any day after that for that matter because you won't be here anymore.. Today is your last day alive! You're not supposed to be thinking about these things right now! You have 30 minutes before your husband is home from work so you need to get moving! If you want things to go according to plan then you need to calm down and focus! Everything will be fine; everything has been fine up until this point so just keep your cool! You've got this! You can do this! Just pull yourself together!
Noma took a deep breath and splashed some water on her face. She had been feeling increasingly trapped and suffocated in her own life. The weight of her secret had become too much to bear, and now, on this final day, she had made up her mind. It was time to bring an end to the tangled web of deceit that had consumed her existence for ten long years.
She glanced at the clock on the wall, its ticking filling the silence of the kitchen. Only twenty-five minutes remained. Every second now felt like a lifetime ticking away, bringing her closer to the point of no return.
Noma continued washing the dishes with a newfound determination. Each plate and utensil was a mere distraction from the storm swirling inside her mind. Thoughts of her children, of Alexander, of the consequences of her actions, threatened to consume her. But she had come too far to turn back now.
As she finished the last of the dishes, she moved to the cupboard and retrieved a small, nondescript box from the top shelf. She had hidden it carefully all these years, waiting for the day when she would summon the courage to open it. Today was that day.
Inside the box lay a bundle of papers, faded photographs, and a letter. The memories flooded back as she touched each item, transporting her to a time when Alexander's touch ignited a fire within her, a time when they believed their love could conquer any obstacle. But reality had a way of crashing down on them, forcing them to make difficult choices.
With trembling hands, Noma unfolded the letter. The words, penned by Alexander all those years ago, entered her heart like a stab wound. He had written of his undying love, of the dreams they had shared, and the sacrifices he had made for their secret affair. And then, the bitter truth: he had chosen to stay with his wife, forsaking their love for the sake of their families.
Tears streamed down Noma's face as she traced the words with her fingertips. She had never truly moved on from Alexander, haunted by what could have been. But today, she would release herself from the chains of their tormented past. She would no longer live a life of shadows and secrets.
Noma folded the letter and placed it back in the box. The heaviness in her heart began to dissipate, replaced by a newfound resolve. Today, she would break free and choose herself—the person she had lost along the way. For her children, for the woman she had become, she would forge a new path.
She walked to a drawer and pulled out a thick envelope. It contained the necessary legal documents—the divorce papers she had meticulously prepared. It was time to face the truth, to reveal the truth. Alexander needed to know about their son, about the life they had created together.
With determination shining in her eyes, Noma sealed the envelope and placed it on the counter. She would hand it to Alexander tonight, after they put the children to sleep. There would be no more secrets, no more pain. It was time to reclaim her life and fight for her happiness.
As she heard the front door open and Alexander's footsteps nearing the kitchen, Noma took a deep breath. The moment of truth had arrived. The kitchen, once a place of hidden desires and forbidden love, would now witness the birth of her freedom—the beginning of a new chapter in her life. And with every step Alexander took toward her, Noma knew she was on the path to finding her true self once again.
