·
Published 4/2/2023In Early Renaissance Germany, an impulsive 11-year-old named Fritz and his wisecracking friend Tobiasknown for his story-telling prowessembark on a series of chaotic misadventures leading them to discover important lessons about friendship, courage, and the value of being a receptive listener.
Fritz and Toobi had been friends for as long as they could remember. Toobi always let Fritz play with his toys, even though he was three years older. He was never mean to Fritz. In fact, the two were so close that they were known to people as "The Two Feriots". The townspeople often saw them getting into all sorts of trouble at the market, but they never thought less of the pair. All in all, it was a good life for Fritz and Toobi.
One day, however, everything changed. It happened on a sunny day when the boys went to pick apples at the orchard. The first apple tree that they reached was overlooked by a rooster who slept in a nearby tall pine. The boys tried to pick apples from that tree, but the rooster woke up and attacked them. They ran around the tree to avoid the pecking bird, and suddenly Toobi slipped on a fallen apple and fell face-first into an angry looking bee's nest that hung from a branch above him. The bees stung him on his cheeks and nose ten times before Fritz managed to put out the angry insects with water from his water bottle.
Afterwards, the two boys wandered through the orchard until they came to another apple tree that was planted next to a barn. As they picked apples from the tree, they heard loud sounds coming from inside the barn. At first it sounded like someone was hammering nails into wood, but after a while it sounded more like someone was hammering nails into other people's bodies! The two boys decided to take a closer look at this strange barn, but when they peeked inside through one of its windows, they saw something that made their hearts stop cold: A man in ragged clothes stood there beating up another man who lay tied up on a table! It looked like he was going to beat him up for fun!
Fritz grabbed Toobi's arm and pulled him away from the window. "What are we going to do?" he whispered breathlessly into Toobi's ear. "We've got to get help!"
"How?" asked Toobi in reply. "We're alone in this orchard! We've got no idea where we are!"
"But if we don't do something now, that poor man will get beaten up even harder!" replied Fritz worriedly. "We've got to go somewhere!"
"That's what I'm saying," said Toobi with wide eyes and an open mouth. "But where? If we just walk away without doing anything, then maybe he won't get hurt."
Fritz turned around and looked back over his shoulder at the barn door behind them. He didn't want to stand around here any longer listening to those horrible thumping noises! But if he just ran off without doing anything, then maybe there would be another victim later on! His heart pounded loudly against his chest and his hands were shaking so much that he almost couldn't hold himself upright anymore! What should he do? What should he do?! Finally he made up his mind:
