Published 6/12/2023A determined programmer striving to program the future of artificial intelligence finds himself unable to unlearn the past and create the error-free reality he desperately seeks.

"You know what? Fuck it."
Avery was sprawled out across his bed in the corner of his small, shoddy apartment. He was on the verge of passing out from a long and hard day at work but couldn't sleep because he kept hearing a noise that sounded like a dog growling outside his window. His eyes were closed and he tried to ignore the sound by thinking about how much he wanted to go home and how many hours he still had to work tomorrow before they would give him another break. When he opened his eyes again and tried to roll over, however, he hit something soft. Something that wasn't in his room before.
Avery's eyes shot open, and he sat up quickly with a startle. There was an old man sitting on Avery's bed wearing a large, red wizard hat. He was sipping on a cup of tea while reading a book with the title "The Secrets of Life: A Guide to Becoming Immortal" written on its cover. The old man kept reading even when Avery looked at him with wide eyes. Avery went to move his hand to grab for the gun under his pillow but stopped when he realized that there was no such thing there anymore. The man noticed this and put down his book to take another sip from his tea as if nothing was wrong.
"What the fuck?!" Avery yelled out loud, making the man look up from his book again.
"Now now," he said calmly. "Guns don't do any good these days."
Avery stared at him with an open mouth for several seconds before finally saying, "Who are you?"
"Ah! I'm just here to discuss your future." The man took off his hat and held it in front of him with both hands as if presenting himself to royalty. "I am Dellisotmeph, the Wizard of Tomorrow!" He bowed slightly toward Avery while speaking in a formal tone. "It is my honor to be here today to discuss your future." He then straightened himself back up again while putting back on the hat which made Avery think that it could not possibly be comfortable to wear outside of some kind of costume party somewhere during Halloween or something stupid like that. He tried not to let that distract him from being more than confused about why this man was even here in the first place.
"Okay, so what does 'the Wizard' want from me?" Avery asked after realizing that it might have been better not to say something rude yet again just because he didn't know why this old guy was here in his house instead of just having some kind of bad dream or something like that. After all it didn't seem like this could possibly be reality anymore with everything else going on today already so far...
The man smiled at him brightly as if he had just been waiting for someone to ask that very question right then. "Well! You see! I am here for you! To help you get whatever you want out of life through my gift!" With a flourish of one arm, the old man pulled out from behind his back a wand that looked more like a small stick of wood than anything else and waved it around without pointing it towards Avery directly although its trail seemed to move towards him as if by some other force instead of any physical movement by Dellisotmeph himself. It made Avery feel uneasy somehow even though nothing happened for several seconds until...
