Pacific Immorality
·
Published 2/10/2023In a tense and richly detailed Pacific world, deadly assassin Alina reluctantly finds her formidable target, an immortal young boy named Jed, and the two embark on an adventure to uncover his true identity, a quest packed with danger, mystery, love and the ultimate battle for life and death.
She had finally found him. After months, no, years of searching, she had finally located the one they called ‘the immortal’. She had been so close to her goal, but now it was all over. Once she had seen his face and heard his voice, her mission would be fulfilled. The end of her long journey was in sight and once this was over, she could start a new life. She could have a family and live as a normal person for once.
She waited in the dark alley across from the small diner he had entered; one hand hovering over her holster with her gun ready to fire at a moment’s notice. Her other hand clenched into a fist as she tried to temper her rage. Something inside of her burned with an intensity that made her whole body shake with anger and frustration. After all she had done for them; after all the people she had killed on their behalf, they still betrayed her in the end. They were cowards and backstabbers who thought they were above reproach just because they held positions of power in their little world of magic and fantasy.
She watched through the windows as he ordered some food and sat down at a table by himself. As soon as he started eating, she knew that it would only be minutes until his death. She pulled out her gun and took aim at his head, ready to end his life once and for all. There was no turning back now; it was time to finish this once and for all.
Before she could pull the trigger though, something made her hesitate; something about him seemed familiar somehow. He ate alone like he always did, but there was something unusual about him tonight that set off alarms in her mind. She couldn't put her finger on it though; nothing seemed different than usual except that he looked more tired than usual if that was possible for him to look anyway. Maybe it was just wishful thinking on her part, but she couldn't quite bring herself to shoot someone who looked so pitiful and helpless sitting there by himself eating dinner alone like the loner he was supposed to be.
No! This is wrong! He deserves this! I need to finish my mission or else I will never be free of them! She raised her gun again only to hesitate once more when she saw how pathetic he looked sitting there chewing on his food like an animal devouring its prey without any dignity or pride left in him whatsoever. The thought disgusted her and made her feel guilty at the same time; how could these people treat such a talented assassin with so little respect? Why couldn't they see what they were doing to him? How could they treat someone so powerful in such a way?
“You know you can't kill me don't you?” His voice behind her startled Alina enough to make her drop the gun from her hand before she even realized what happened. She turned slowly towards him as if moving towards a wild animal preparing for any sudden movements; instead, she saw nothing more than an injured boy standing before her with blood dripping from his leg where the bullet grazed past him when it fell from Alina's hand earlier.
“How…?” Alina whispered as she stared at him with wide eyes full of shock and disbelief at what she saw before her eyes: A boy bleeding before her eyes yet not dying nor even looking like he was in pain anymore after being shot by a trained professional assassin like himself! It wasn't possible! A thousand questions raced through Alina's mind as she stared in shock at this young man standing before her who should have died long ago according to everyone else except perhaps herself but there were no answers anywhere within reach of Alina's mind right now because there were simply too many questions crowding up against each other inside of Alina's brain while everything else went quiet around them as if Alina were under some strange spell created by this boy who stood before her still bleeding profusely yet not dying or even looking hurt anymore despite being shot point blank in the head walking towards Alina with an intent look on his face as if he wanted something from Alina beyond just killing him!
