"Hey, Aunt Mar. I'm gonna go to the store and get some stuff for dinner."

"What do you need?" Maria asked, her voice muffled as she spoke into her cell phone. She was in the kitchen, peering over the edge of the counter at Gable as he stood in the doorway of their small apartment.

Gable waved his hand dismissively and started down the hallway to his room. "Uh... just some cheese and maybe some apples or something."

Maria frowned and shook her head. "You can't go to the store by yourself, Gable," she said sternly, hanging up her phone. "It's not safe out there."

Gable looked back at her with a smile on his face. "Psh... I can take care of myself." He turned around again and made his way down the hall to his bedroom door.

Maria sighed and stepped up behind him, placing her hand on his shoulder as he reached for the doorknob. She turned him gently around to face her and looked into his eyes, barely an inch from his own. She could smell a hint of smoke on him - he'd been smoking weed again this afternoon while he was playing video games with his buddies from school - but that didn't concern her as much as it had when he first started doing it four years ago. He'd stopped running away from home after that one time when he was eleven, so she figured it was probably okay for him to have a little fun now and then without getting into any trouble.

"I know you think you're tough," she said gravely, "but you're still my baby boy." Her expression softened as she affectionately stroked his cheek with her palm. Gable smiled calmly at her gaze and hugged her tightly around the waist with both arms as she continued looking into his eyes, not saying anything else for several seconds. Maria finally broke the silence when she felt Maria's grip around her abdomen tighten slightly. "Okay... I'll call your father," she said quietly, patting Gable's bottom playfully before releasing him from the hug and walking off towards their kitchen phone. "Then you can go get your stuff for dinner."

............1 hour later.....
